About the Role

Join Gore Mutual, a modern mutual insurance company undergoing an exciting transformation through its integration with Beneva and Unica Insurance, as an In-House Counsel specializing in insurance defense for casualty and accident benefits matters. This position is based in Ontario with hybrid and remote work options available. You will become a vital part of a growing and diversified legal team dedicated to supporting the long-term interests of members and communities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage an extensive portfolio containing over 50 legal files independently, aligning with your expertise level.
  • Drive litigation processes from initial case assignment through discovery, mediation, pre-trials, and resolve them via settlements, trials, or arbitrations.
  • Provide strategic advocacy by representing the company in contested motions, arbitrations, trials, and appeals.
  • Identify areas for legal process innovation and deliver targeted training to enhance the broader team's technical capabilities.
  • Develop effective collaborative relationships with legal support staff and internal clients to facilitate efficient case resolutions.

Candidate Profile and Qualifications

  • Possess a Juris Doctor (J.D.) or Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) degree and maintain active good standing with the Law Society of Ontario.
  • Bring 3 to 8 years of litigation experience specifically within insurance defense focusing on casualty and accident benefits.
  • Have proven courtroom competency, including success in contested motions, mediations, trials, and arbitrations.
  • Exhibit strong analytical skills and a preference for utilizing digital-first legal research tools.
  • Demonstrate excellent communication abilities, capable of translating complex legal risks into clear, actionable guidance for stakeholders without legal backgrounds.

Compensation and Work Environment

  • The salary range is $97,500 to $147,500 annually, depending on experience and qualifications.
  • Eligibility to participate in Gore Mutual's discretionary bonus program.
