Job description
About Karbon
Karbon is a globally recognized AI-driven practice management platform built for accounting firms. Its cloud software supports tens of thousands of accounting professionals in working more productively and collaboratively each day. The company serves customers in 40 countries and operates with a distributed workforce across the US, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, the United Kingdom, and the Philippines. Backed by strong funding, ranked number one on G2, and expanding quickly, Karbon is also known for a people-first environment with Great Place To Work® certification and a place on Fortune magazine’s Best Small Workplaces™ list.
About the Role
This People Business Partner position sits within a high-performing People team and reports to the VP of People. The role is designed for someone commercially minded, naturally proactive, and comfortable working with both core HR practice and the AI tools changing how modern HR teams operate. You will mainly support the Engineering and Product functions, while also influencing senior stakeholders, improving performance outcomes, and bringing meaningful people insight into business decisions.
The ideal person already understands team health, delivery pace, attrition indicators, and engagement patterns before entering a leader discussion, and can add insights that help leaders see issues and opportunities earlier.
Work Arrangement
This is a hybrid position based close to Town Hall station, with attendance in the office three days per week.
Key Responsibilities
- Work closely and proactively with the Chief Product Officer and Chief Technology Officer, developing a deep understanding of their delivery approach, team structure, and business metrics so you can help shape the people strategy without waiting to be directed.
- Use AI tools and agentic workflows to uncover insights, automate repetitive tasks, and improve the quality and speed of your output across analysis, reporting, leader preparation, and project delivery.
- Manage and communicate complex employee relations issues clearly, while building leader capability so they can own matters from start to finish.
- Provide confident guidance on modern award interpretation, contract compliance, and workplace health and safety, identifying risks early and addressing them before they escalate.
- Push back constructively when needed, balancing support with sound judgement where people or business risk is involved, and using data plus AI-generated insights to strengthen your recommendations.
- Turn people metrics and analytics into clear business stories that help align leadership, using AI to go deeper and move faster rather than simply producing reports.
- Lead and deliver targeted HR initiatives that add value and continue improving the people function overall.
- Act as a change partner by guiding leaders and teams through organisational change when required.
- Work in close partnership with People Operations and Talent to create a smooth employee experience throughout the full employee lifecycle and contribute to global People initiatives across Karbon’s seven regions.
What We’re Looking For
- At least 4 years of experience as an HR Advisor, People Partner, or HR Business Partner, supported by a solid generalist HR background.
- Experience in SaaS or another high-growth technology environment is essential, along with a strong understanding of how Engineering and Product teams function and what influences delivery and team health.
- Practical knowledge of Australian employment law, Fair Work, modern award interpretation, and workplace health and safety.
- A proactive partnership style that includes reviewing data, joining business review discussions, and bringing forward people insights before leaders request them.
- Credibility with senior stakeholders and the confidence to engage as an equal partner rather than a purely support-oriented function.
- The ability to challenge leaders respectfully and effectively, especially when decisions may have negative people or business consequences.
- Strong comfort working with data and turning it into persuasive narratives that influence strategic decisions.
- Hands-on experience using AI tools and agentic workflows regularly to improve productivity, reduce manual work, and increase speed.
- Capability to manage multiple projects at once and deliver outcomes without close oversight.
- Experience supporting leaders with org design and workforce planning, plus curiosity about coaching for the realities of AI-augmented teams.
- High integrity, strong emotional intelligence, and sound judgement when handling sensitive matters discreetly and compassionately.
- Genuine interest in the future of work and AI’s role in shaping it.
Why Karbon
- Opportunity to gain international exposure across the USA, New Zealand, the UK, the Philippines, and Canada.
- Direct people support for C-suite leaders.
- Four weeks of annual leave, plus five additional Karbon Days off each year.
- A flexible working environment.
- The chance to learn from an experienced and high-performing team.
- Career growth in a fast-scaling company that promotes high performers from within.
- A collaborative culture that values diversity, supports development, and encourages ongoing feedback.
- Generous parental leave.
