Position Summary

This full-time remote HR Specialist position supports Aquila’s workforce primarily in Indiana, along with remote employees in other states. Reporting to the Controller, this role focuses extensively on managing the entire employee lifecycle, especially onboarding, employee relations, and ensuring compliance with applicable regulations. A strong understanding of Indiana employment law and comfort operating in a fast-moving remote environment are essential.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Lead comprehensive and efficient onboarding for new hires, handling documentation, background checks, and system access.
  • Conduct virtual orientation to introduce employees to company policies, safety practices, and culture.
  • Manage offboarding including exit interviews and recovery of company assets.
  • Provide support and mediation for employee relations issues, assisting in conflict resolution and policy enforcement.
  • Investigate grievances and disciplinary matters with confidentiality, offering recommendations to management.
  • Promote a positive, inclusive remote work culture across field and office teams with an emphasis on safety.
  • Ensure full compliance with federal, state (including Indiana), and local employment laws such as OSHA, FLSA, FMLA, and EEOC.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential personnel records within the HR information system.
  • Assist with creating and updating employee handbooks, policies, and procedures.
  • Support HR audits and reporting as needed.

Qualifications & Skills

  • Minimum of one year’s experience as an HR Generalist or Specialist, preferably in construction, utilities, manufacturing, or field services.
  • Firm working knowledge of Indiana employment law and related HR compliance.
  • Strong communication abilities, capable of engaging remotely with employees and supervisors.
  • Technologically adept with HRIS, applicant tracking systems, and virtual tools like Microsoft Teams.
  • Educational background in Human Resources, Business Administration, or similar; HR certifications such as SHRM-CP or PHR advantageous.
