Role overview

Northwood is looking for a Housekeeper to join its Halifax team on a 4-month term basis. The role reports to the Manager, Environmental Services and involves carrying out cleaning tasks that help maintain a safe and orderly work environment.

Working hours and term

This is a part-time daytime position. The schedule is 32 hours biweekly, arranged as 8-hour shifts. The role is effective immediately.

Requirements

• Grade 10 or an equivalent level of education is required.
• You must be able to read, write, understand instructions, and carry them through accurately.
• Physical ability to lift, push, pull, and move heavy equipment and furniture regularly, up to 50 lbs.
• Good personal hygiene is expected.
• Prior experience in laundry work is needed.
• Consistency in attendance must meet Northwood’s corporate standard.
• You should be comfortable working with co-workers, supervisors, and residents.
• The role requires the ability to work with limited supervision and take initiative.
• A minimum of 2 years of housekeeping experience in a Long Term Care or Acute Care setting is required.
• Knowledge of floor stripping, WHMIS, carpet care, and floor refinishing is necessary.

Responsibilities

• Carry out cleaning tasks in the assigned areas.
• Move garbage and recycling, including pushing and pulling large carts when needed.
• Perform routine floor and carpet upkeep using approved procedures and methods.
• Run washers and dryers according to set formulas and the manufacturer’s guidance.
• Support laundry operations as needed, including folding, untangling, pressing, packing, and distributing clean linen and laundry.
• Clean and maintain washing and drying equipment, as well as the linen and laundry rooms.
• Use chemicals safely by following proper labeling, storage, and handling practices, and wear PPE as directed on MSDS.
• Keep equipment and the work area clean, organized, and in good repair.
• Complete special cleaning assignments and project work as directed by the supervisor.
• Set up spaces for special functions when required.
• Assist with office moves, including transporting desks, cabinets, and other furniture between areas.
• Perform any other duties assigned.
