Job description
Role Overview
The City of Farmington is hiring temporary, part-time Hospitality Staff for its museum operations. The position is based across multiple museum and visitor-focused locations in Farmington, NM, and supports guest services, museum store activity, and general visitor assistance.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide support across visitor information and museum store areas at several sites, including Farmington Museum, Riverside Nature Center, E3 Children's Museum & Science Center, Museum of Navajo Art & Culture, and Harvest Grove Farm & Orchard.
- Help secure museum facilities at closing when needed.
- Work with the Museum Director and Hospitality Staff Supervisor while assisting CVB and museum staff with gateway visitor services.
- Welcome guests, answer questions, and guide visitors to accurate information or the right resource when needed.
- Serve as the first point of contact for visitors and handle complaints courteously or route them to the appropriate staff member.
- Support museum store operations, including sales assistance and general store duties.
- Prepare a weekly events listing for the Four Corners area using newspapers, calendars, bulletin boards, periodicals, and other sources.
- Replenish brochures at the visitor kiosk and keep the visitor/atrium area neat and presentable.
- Assist with sales transactions and count change accurately.
- Help stock merchandise and maintain the appearance of the store.
- Support volunteer training and supervision.
- Assist museum staff with gallery-related visitor service tasks.
- Perform data entry as required.
- Help visitors use the park reservation system and coordinate with the reservation system operator.
- Maintain regular attendance, which is considered an essential part of the role.
Qualifications and Requirements
- General computer familiarity is needed.
- A friendly, energetic, and service-oriented approach is important.
- Applicants must be able to pass extensive background checks.
- Working knowledge of Farmington and the surrounding area is required.
- Strong interpersonal skills are needed to work effectively with the public of all ages, volunteers, staff, school groups, tour groups, and others.
- Ability to make change and handle money accurately is required.
- Applicants should be able to communicate clearly in speaking and writing, follow oral and written instructions, and give simple directions.
- Must be able to listen carefully and understand questions or possible issues.
- Physical ability to lift, push, or pull up to 50 pounds with assistance for stocking and cleaning tasks.
- Must be able to work a varied shift schedule.
- Ability to meet deadlines is required.
- Must be able to use the tools and equipment associated with the job.
- This position is subject to the City’s Drug and Alcohol Free Workplace Program, including pre-employment, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, return-to-duty, and follow-up testing.
- Participation in the City’s Environmental, Health, and Safety program is mandatory.
Tools and Equipment
The role uses a cash register, credit card machine, telephone, calculator, and personal computer with applicable software.
Work Conditions
Work is performed both indoors and outdoors in all types of weather. The environment may include exposure to moving mechanical parts, wet or humid conditions, and lightning. Noise levels are moderate.
Physical Requirements
The job regularly involves reaching with hands and arms; frequently standing, walking, and using hands to handle objects or controls as well as speaking and hearing. Occasional sitting, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling may also be required. The position may involve lifting or moving up to 50 pounds with assistance and requires vision abilities such as close, distant, color, peripheral, and depth perception, plus the ability to adjust focus.
Schedule and Employment Details
