Job description

Role and Facility Overview

Royal Inland Hospital (RIH) in Kamloops is looking for a hospitalist to join a supportive, collegial practice. As the region’s tertiary referral centre for the Thompson Cariboo Shuswap area, the hospital offers a varied and stimulating clinical setting. The role involves caring for patients across the lifespan and managing a broad range of conditions, such as acute medical illness, chronic disease, complex geriatric needs, and trauma. The patient population is highly diverse and includes Indigenous communities and new Canadians, with seasonal and regional changes adding variety to the work.

Hospitalists at RIH are backed by an experienced team, with a strong focus on mentorship, structured onboarding, interdisciplinary teamwork, and ongoing professional growth.

Scheduling and Work Pattern

The schedule is built to promote flexibility and long-term sustainability. Full-time hospitalists work 24 weeks each year, averaging 72 hours per week. A typical week includes six day shifts, one 12-hour late shift ending at midnight with on-site coverage until 11 p.m., and one 8-hour overnight home call. For a 1.0 FTE, this works out to about one extended late shift and one overnight call every two weeks, and the call pattern can be adjusted based on personal preference. Hours worked between 11 p.m. and 8 a.m. qualify for MOCAP Level 2. Part-time arrangements are also supported.

Teaching, Learning, and Leadership

RIH encourages lifelong learning and academic participation. Hospitalists take part in interdisciplinary rounds, supported CME activities, and conferences. There are also opportunities to teach family practice residents, UBC third-year clerks, and fourth-year visiting students. Leadership development is available through Interior Health’s NAVIG8 Program.

Compensation

This is a clinical service contract role. For a full-time hospitalist, the expected annual base income is $336,168, or $200.10 per hour. In addition, up to 40% more may be available through group contract incentives. MOCAP Level 2 and after-hours premiums are also offered. Physician overhead includes a small hourly payment of $3.48 for each hour worked.

Relocation Support

Relocation reimbursement is available for eligible moves, with a maximum of $9,000 for relocation within British Columbia, $12,000 for moves within Canada, and $15,000 for moves from outside Canada. Reimbursement requires eligible detailed receipts. Relocation incentives may change and will be confirmed at the time of offer.

Additional Information

This opportunity is suited to a hospitalist who values compassionate care, teamwork, clinical excellence, and professional development in a dynamic regional hospital environment.
