Job description

Role overview

The Royal Hobart Hospital is Tasmania’s main tertiary referral hospital, delivering a full range of general and specialist medical and surgical care, alongside paediatrics, obstetrics and psychiatry. It also functions as the state’s tertiary trauma centre.

The Emergency Department provides round-the-clock tertiary emergency care every day of the week. It manages more than 75,000 patient presentations each year, with over 35% requiring admission and around 20% being paediatric cases.

The department also includes a co-located Emergency Medical Unit, a short-stay ward for patients who usually need less than 24 hours in hospital. This unit has 24 short-stay beds, operates 24/7, and supports a fast-paced environment with a broad mix of clinical presentations.

What the role involves

  • Cleaning, decontaminating and sterilising both standard and specialist equipment in line with infection prevention procedures.
  • Operating sterilisation equipment suited to the needs of the specialty area.
  • Keeping specialised equipment clean, including the surrounding area, while following infection control requirements.
  • Organising and prioritising the daily workload after handover so beds and bed spaces are prepared for incoming patients.

What you need

  • Knowledge and/or practical experience in cleaning, decontaminating, sterilising and maintaining equipment and surroundings according to infection control principles, policies and procedures.
  • The ability to monitor ward or unit stock and store levels, and place orders when needed.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the willingness and ability to work cooperatively in a multidisciplinary team and contribute to a positive work environment.
