Health, Safety & Wellbeing Officer

About the Role

Become part of the vital mission to eradicate the invasive National Fire Ant pest threatening Australian communities, wildlife, and industries. As a Health, Safety and Wellbeing (HSW) Officer, you will join a collaborative team dedicated to fostering a safe, healthy, and supportive working environment across the Queensland National Fire Ant Eradication Program.

This role involves supporting operational, field, and community-facing settings to cultivate a culture of safety and wellbeing, helping to safeguard workers and the public. You'll be based at the Berrinba office every Monday and spend a minimum of two additional days weekly at various operational sites such as Burleigh Heads, Caboolture, Virginia, Wacol, Laidley, and Mutdapilly, delivering on-site assistance.

Key Responsibilities

• Deliver practical, prompt HSW guidance and conduct WHS inductions for up to 50 new employees, ensuring clear understanding of safety roles and program-specific protocols.
• Assist in identifying hazards, conducting risk assessments, and implementing effective safety controls.
• Support incident documentation, investigation, and follow-up processes.
• Participate in initiatives promoting physical safety and psychological health and wellbeing.
• Engage in workplace visits, consultations, and assurance activities to monitor safety performance.
• Educate employees and supervisors on applicable HSW policies and practices.
• Develop safety briefings, alerts, instructional materials, and other resources.
• Analyze workforce feedback and incident data to detect new risks and prioritize actions.
• Contribute to enhancing HSW capabilities and culture across the program.
• Refer complex or serious issues to senior HSW personnel as needed.

Experience and Exposure

• Work in diverse, geographically spread, field-based operations.
• Engage in incident response efforts and emergency management.
• Gain experience supporting both physical safety and psychological wellbeing.
• Participate in operational risk management, workplace assurance, and workforce development.

Requirements

• Possess a Certificate IV in Work Health and Safety (mandatory).
• Demonstrate curiosity and a strong desire to learn.
• Show resourcefulness and sound decision-making skills.
• Be genuinely motivated to assist and support people.
• Display confidence in building relationships with various stakeholders.
• Provide clear, thoughtful advice and communicate effectively in writing and speaking.
• Maintain organization and adaptability while managing competing tasks.
• Possess proficient IT skills including creating professional documents in Word, engaging presentations in PowerPoint, and detailed reports with formulas and pivot tables in Excel.
