Health Care Aide

Position Summary

The Health Care Aide (HCA) role involves providing direct patient care at the Selkirk Mental Health Centre under the direction of the Manager Health Services. The role is dedicated to assisting patients with daily living activities and supporting their independence and personal goals, all while adhering strictly to the center's mission, vision, values, and healthcare policies.

Work Environment and Schedule

• Work hours include days, evenings, and nights, totaling approximately 11.63 hours per day.
• Annual scheduled work hours are 2015, with a full-time equivalent of 1.00 FTE.
• The position requires in-person attendance at the Selkirk Mental Health Centre.
• Shift work includes potential evening, night, weekend, or extended hours as needed.

Key Responsibilities

• Deliver patient care assistance according to prescribed standards and procedures.
• Support patients’ participation in activities of daily living to promote autonomy and goal achievement.
• Collaborate with healthcare team members and adapt to dynamic healthcare demands.
• Maintain compliance with healthcare protocols relevant to mental health and patient safety.

Required Qualifications and Experience

• Minimum education level: completion of Grade 10.
• Completion of a recognized Health Care Aide certificate or course is mandatory.
• Experience in mental health care or supporting individuals with physical or cognitive challenges is preferred.

Skills and Knowledge

• Proficient oral and written communication abilities.
• Effective command of the English language.
• Understanding of the Personal Health Information Act (PHIA), Workplace Hazardous Material Information System (WHMIS), Routine Practices, and Workplace Safety and Health protocols.
• Familiarity with Indigenous customs, traditions, and values is advantageous.
• Ability to manage priorities and multiple demands in patient care settings.
• Capacity to work independently as well as cooperatively with healthcare teams.
• Flexibility to quickly adapt to changing situations and foster self-improvement.

Physical and Work Requirements

• The role demands moderate to heavy physical activity, including standing, patient transfers, and equipment handling.
• Candidates must be prepared to manage potential encounters with agitated or aggressive individuals.

Additional Employment Conditions

• A satisfactory and current Criminal Records Check (including Vulnerable Sector Search) alongside Child and Adult Abuse Registry Checks are mandatory prior to employment. These must be obtained no earlier than six months before the start date, with related costs borne by the employee.
• Employees are restricted from holding multiple Shared Health positions cumulatively exceeding full-time equivalency (1.0 FTE).

Salary Details

• Hourly wage rates span from $23.187 to $26.800 progressively.
