Position Summary
Afrimat Industries in Lichtenburg, North West, South Africa, is seeking a qualified Health and Safety Specialist to join their team. The role demands overseeing health and safety compliance, fostering a safe working environment, and driving continuous safety improvements in accordance with South African legislation and company policies.
Primary Responsibilities
- Ensure strict adherence to all Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) legislation, standards, and internal procedures.
- Contribute to the maintenance and enhancement of the Health and Safety Management System, aligned with ISO 45001 or similar standards.
- Facilitate identification of hazards and conduct risk assessments throughout operational processes.
- Lead investigations into incidents, near misses, injuries, and any property damage to determine root causes.
- Organize toolbox talks, safety campaigns, and other awareness-raising activities to promote safety.
- Offer expert advice and mentorship to supervisors and employees regarding safety practices.
- Support emergency preparedness including planning, implementation, and upkeep of emergency equipment inspection logs.
- Promote and nurture a pro-active safety culture within the organization.
- Guide Health and Safety Officers and Representatives, coordinate safety committee meetings, and enhance employee involvement in safety initiatives.
- Prepare comprehensive safety reports, maintain required statutory registers and records, and monitor critical safety performance metrics.
- Analyze trends in safety data and recommend effective corrective measures.
- Conduct internal safety audits, monitor the execution and effectiveness of corrective actions, and ensure compliance with audit outcomes.
- Oversee contractor safety compliance, including assessments, audits, onboarding, and performance reviews to meet regulatory and company requirements.
- Fulfill additional duties as assigned.
Essential Qualifications and Experience
- National Diploma or Degree in Safety Management, Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Health, Risk Management, or a related discipline.
- Training in Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment is mandatory.
- Certification as an ISO 45001 Internal Auditor is an advantageous asset.
- A minimum of two years in a senior or supervisory role within the safety domain.
- Demonstrated expertise in conducting incident investigations and root cause analysis.
- Experience in managing contractor safety compliance and executing audits.
- Comprehensive knowledge of South African Occupational Health and Safety regulations.
- Strong communication abilities coupled with effective leadership skills.
