Role overview
Cairn is hiring a Health and Safety Officer for a residential construction project in Blessington. The successful person will own day-to-day health and safety oversight on site, support the rollout of Cairn Homes’ safety management system, and work closely with the Health and Safety Manager, to whom this role reports directly.
This position suits an experienced, self-driven professional who can work well in a team environment, bring practical commercial awareness, and help deliver the project safely and successfully.
Key responsibilities
- Partner with the construction management team to help maintain a safe, productive site.
- Continuously improve health and safety standards in a practical way across the company system and individual sites.
- Track, support, and enforce the Cairn Homes Health & Safety Management System on site.
- Spot site-specific risks and make sure they are properly reflected in documentation and addressed in practice.
- Keep communication lines open and clear with the Health & Safety Manager.
- Maintain site folders and all required statutory records on the project.
- Ensure contractors follow site rules without exception.
- Support site management in meeting legal health and safety obligations.
- Help develop and apply risk assessments and safer working methods across Cairn Homes sites.
- Assist site leadership in ensuring contractor compliance on Cairn Homes projects.
- Coordinate safe systems of work for contractors alongside the H&S Manager and site team.
- Apply site disciplinary procedures where required.
- Conduct health and safety audits, and work with site management and contractors to close out any non-compliances.
- Participate in incident and accident investigations.
- Help shape, discuss, and deliver toolbox talks.
- Identify training gaps for Cairn personnel and contractors on site.
Candidate profile
You should bring at least 4 years of experience managing safety systems in construction, together with a qualification in Occupational Health and Safety. Membership of IOSH is preferred.
The ideal candidate can take initiative within the boundaries of the management system, build strong working relationships across stakeholders and statutory bodies, manage risk effectively, and communicate confidently with contractors from a range of trades and backgrounds. Experience chairing and delivering health and safety meetings and presentations is also important.
