Role summary
Based in Midleton, County Cork, the Health and Safety Officer supports safe working practices across four operational sites in Ireland. The role partners with managers and site leadership to strengthen a proactive safety mindset, keep the business aligned with Irish health and safety law, uphold company procedures, complete risk assessments, investigate incidents and contribute to ongoing improvement.
Key responsibilities
- Plan and deliver engaging health and safety training for employees and managers across all Irish locations.
- Work with site leadership to reinforce consistent and safe working methods everywhere the business operates.
- Carry out inspections, audits and compliance checks to help maintain a safe workplace.
- Review operating procedures and Safe Systems of Work to ensure they remain workable, legally compliant and properly followed.
- Investigate accidents, incidents and near misses using recognised root-cause analysis methods, and recommend corrective and preventive actions.
- Partner with site managers to identify risks and training needs that can improve safety performance.
- Keep clear and accurate records for training, near misses, incidents, inspections, risk assessments and audit outcomes.
- Help build and sustain a positive health and safety culture across the organisation.
- Design and support initiatives that drive continuous improvement in health and safety performance.
- Assist managers during internal, customer and third-party audits.
- Ensure the company remains compliant with current Irish health and safety legislation and relevant industry standards.
- Manage priorities effectively while supporting multiple operational sites.
- Track health and safety KPIs and prepare management reports.
- Contribute to emergency planning, business continuity and crisis response activities when needed.
Health and safety duties for all employees
Under the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005, every employee must take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of anyone who may be affected by their actions.
- Follow all health and safety policies, procedures and Safe Systems of Work.
- Use machinery, equipment, materials and safety devices correctly and never misuse items provided for safety reasons.
- Carry out tasks in line with approved procedures, training and site standards.
- Wear the required PPE and use all applicable safety controls.
- Report accidents, incidents, near misses and unsafe conditions straight away, even if no injury or damage has occurred.
- Cooperate fully with investigations into accidents and incidents.
- Offer practical suggestions to improve health and safety performance.
- Understand emergency procedures, including evacuation and incident response processes.
- Maintain good housekeeping and workplace organisation to reduce risk.
- Take part in mandatory health and safety training.
Qualifications, skills and experience
The ideal candidate will bring a strong practical grounding in health and safety, preferably within logistics, warehousing, cold storage or food distribution environments. Knowledge of Irish legislation, compliance frameworks and accredited management systems will be important in this role.
- Membership of IOSH is desirable, although support and development may be offered to the right person.
- Train-the-Trainer certification is desirable.
- Working knowledge of Irish health and safety legislation, including the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005 and related regulations, is preferred; willingness to build this knowledge is also acceptable.
- Experience in BRCGS, ISO or other accredited management systems.
- Understanding of risk assessment methods and HACCP.
- Background in multi-site logistics, warehousing, cold storage or food distribution.
- Experience supporting or introducing behavioural safety programmes is desirable.
- Experience participating in internal and external audits, such as BRCGS, ISO and customer audits.
- Ability to interpret legal and compliance requirements and apply them in day-to-day operations.
- Experience creating and maintaining compliance frameworks and audit schedules.
- Capability to analyse health and safety data and spot trends.
- Experience producing KPI reports, dashboards and trend analysis is desirable, with development support available where needed.
- Experience creating and delivering structured training programmes is desirable.
- Ability to check training effectiveness and confirm employee competency.
- Commitment to ongoing learning and safety improvement.
- Strong influencing skills and confidence in challenging unsafe behaviours at all levels of the organisation.
- Comfortable delivering presentations, inductions, training sessions and toolbox talks.
- Experience working across functions while balancing competing priorities.
- Self-driven, proactive and able to work independently across multiple sites.
- Strong attention to detail and a practical, solutions-focused approach.
- A full clean Category B driving licence and willingness to travel regularly between sites.
Authority and limitations
- No authority to approve capital expenditure.
- Must operate within company policies, procedures and delegated authority limits.
- Any major policy changes or operational departures need senior management approval.
- The role provides advice and recommendations but does not make operational decisions outside delegated authority.
