Job description

Overview

Defence Equipment & Support (DE&S), part of the UK Ministry of Defence (MOD), is seeking a dedicated Health and Safety Advisor to join the Defence Munitions Crombie site in Dunfermline, Scotland. This role is key in supporting critical defence operations by ensuring safety compliance and promoting a strong culture of health and safety in a high-hazard environment. You will work within the recently integrated National Armaments Director Group (NAD Group), supporting better collaboration across the Ministry of Defence.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide expert occupational health and safety advice to ensure all on-site activities meet legal, best practice, and internal standards.
  • Implement and manage effective inspection and assurance programs to monitor compliance, including conducting inspections, reporting outcomes, and driving continuous safety improvements.
  • Develop and sustain productive relationships with colleagues, contractors, delivery partners, and other defence organisations to support health and safety objectives.
  • Lead incident management by performing investigations, root cause analyses, and producing detailed reports to capture lessons learned.
  • Support safety governance by advising committees and management boards, integrating safety considerations into strategic and operational decision-making.
  • Oversee fire safety compliance through reviewing risk assessments, coordinating drills, managing preventive measures, and improving fire safety protocols.

Person Specification and Requirements

  • Minimum qualification of NEBOSH General Certificate or equivalent Level 3 safety qualification.
  • Proven experience in a health and safety advisory position, preferably in environments with elevated risk levels.
  • Valid UK driving license to facilitate travel between sites.

Additional assessed competencies include effective communication and influence, ability to deliver outcomes at pace, practitioner-level incident investigation, and audit and assurance in occupational health, safety, and environmental protection.

Benefits and Working Conditions

  • Competitive annual salary of 36,000 with an employer pension contribution of 28.97% under the Civil Service Defined Benefit Pension scheme.
  • Holiday entitlement of 25 days, increasing by one day annually up to 30 days, plus eight bank holidays and one additional day for the King's birthday.
  • Annual performance bonuses, access to specialized training, career progression support, discounts, volunteering days, and enhanced parental leave.
  • Flexible working hours within a fully on-site role to support work-life balance.
  • Minimal travel within the UK for training and development, with transportation provided when needed.

Security and Eligibility

Candidates must have resided in the UK for the past five years and be able to obtain Security Check (SC) clearance without restrictions that impede role performance. Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.

Diversity and Inclusion

The Ministry of Defence encourages diversity of thought and provides reasonable adjustments throughout the recruitment process to support candidates with disabilities. Candidates are requested to declare any outside interests post-interview to avoid conflicts of interest.

Application and Recruitment Process

Applications undergo pre-sift, sift, and interview stages assessing eligibility, achievements, experience, and applied knowledge. Candidates are reminded to provide truthful information and personal statements based on their own experience.
