Job description

Overview

We are seeking a Head of Sustainability to oversee and drive environmental sustainability and climate-related initiatives at Dangote Fertiliser Limited. This leadership role requires aligning company efforts with the Dangote Group ESG Strategy Framework, regulatory mandates, and sustainability targets. The position involves managing a team to develop and implement sustainability programs, enhancing HSSE systems, and tracking ESG performance while adhering to international environmental standards. The role also entails liaising with internal and external stakeholders to address sustainability inquiries and ensuring strategic compliance at board and executive levels across operations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute the company’s sustainability strategy emphasizing climate change mitigation, carbon footprint reduction, adaptation, and compliance with global standards such as UN SDGs, TCFD, GRI, ISSB, UNGC, and IFC Performance Standards.
  • Formulate and implement corporate sustainability policies aligned with industry best practices and regulatory frameworks.
  • Lead and mentor an ESG team, promoting collaboration and capacity building through various training modalities to meet sustainability goals.
  • Offer strategic advisement and technical expertise on sustainability and climate concerns to senior management and board members.
  • Collaborate with HSSE, Environment, Engineering, Operations, and other internal functions to integrate sustainability into business operations and decisions.
  • Ensure compliance with environmental legislation, ESG standards, and internal policies, recommending corrective actions as needed and fostering an ESG-compliant corporate culture.
  • Manage environmental and climate risk assessments, including biodiversity, water security, emissions, and associated risks, along with developing mitigation approaches.
  • Supervise emissions baseline assessments and establish reduction targets consistent with Net Zero commitments.
  • Develop and maintain GHG data inventory per ISO 14064, GHG Protocol, and IPCC guidelines, covering Scope 1, 2, and material Scope 3 emissions tracking.
  • Create ESG reporting mechanisms, including dashboards and KPIs, to monitor environmental and climate performance, producing annual sustainability reports and other disclosures fit for executive and board review.
  • Maintain relationships with regulators, government bodies, and partners to promote and advance the company’s sustainability objectives and represent the company externally.
  • Manage budgets and allocation of resources for sustainability projects and undertake additional tasks assigned by top management to realize sustainability objectives.

Qualifications and Experience

  • At least 10 years of verifiable experience in sustainability strategy, ESG reporting, climate risk management, stakeholder materiality assessment, and corporate planning within manufacturing, energy, or industrial sectors.
  • Hands-on expertise with international frameworks including GRI, CDP, UNGC, IFRS S1 & S2, ISSB, and TCFD.
  • Proven capability in greenhouse gas accounting (Scope 1, 2, and material Scope 3), setting science-based targets, and building enterprise-wide ESG data management systems to improve reporting accuracy and efficiency.
  • A strong record of managing sustainability initiatives, integrating HSSE, and leading multidisciplinary teams to embed climate-related actions into business processes.
  • Experience in engaging with regulators, development partners, and internal stakeholders to ensure regulatory compliance, enhance ESG disclosures, and support board-level decision-making.
  • Practical knowledge of climate-related initiatives such as low-carbon investments, fleet transitions, carbon capture, and sustainable agriculture projects.
  • Additional professional certifications or training in Sustainability or ESG (e.g., CPD Reporting Certification) are advantageous.
  • Demonstrated ability to interact effectively with corporate boards on ESG and sustainability matters.
