Job description

About the Company

Jumia is a major pan-African e-commerce business focused on making daily life easier across Africa through technology. The company provides practical, affordable and convenient online services to customers while enabling businesses to reach more buyers and serve them better through its platform.

The business is centered on a marketplace and is supported by its own logistics arm, Jumia Logistics, as well as a digital payments and fintech service, Jumia Pay. Jumia has more than 3,000 employees and is led by a mix of local and international leaders. It is backed by prominent shareholders and aims to create lasting positive impact across Africa.

In April 2019, Jumia became the first technology company in Africa to be listed on the New York Stock Exchange.

Role Overview

This position is responsible for driving strategic market growth and expansion. The role involves identifying new opportunities, shaping entry plans, building partnerships, and coordinating with internal teams to support successful rollout into new or growing markets.

Key Responsibilities

  • Create and deliver strategic plans for market expansion by spotting new opportunities, assessing market potential, and defining how to enter each market.
  • Research target markets and analyze competitors, customer demand, market conditions, and the regulatory landscape.
  • Choose and rank target markets based on size, growth prospects, competitive pressure, and alignment with business goals.
  • Build and implement market entry strategies covering segmentation, target customer profiling, channel planning, pricing, and promotional approach.
  • Develop and sustain relationships with important external stakeholders such as government bodies, industry groups, distributors, suppliers, and strategic partners.
  • Work closely with sales, product, operations, and finance teams to ensure expansion plans are coordinated and aligned.
  • Prepare and manage expansion budgets, assign resources effectively, and monitor spending to keep execution cost-efficient.
  • Track performance against expansion goals, review progress metrics, and share regular updates with senior leadership and stakeholders.
  • Spot and address risks linked to expansion, including compliance issues, operational limits, and competitive threats.
  • Keep up to date with sector trends, best practices, and new technologies relevant to market expansion and business development.

Requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Marketing, Economics, or a related discipline is required; a master’s degree is preferred.
  • Several years of experience in market expansion, business development, or similar roles, with evidence of successful market-entry and growth delivery.
  • Strong analytical capability, including market research, competitor analysis, and financial analysis.
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills for working with internal teams, external partners, and industry stakeholders.
  • Strong project management ability, with the capacity to handle multiple priorities and projects at the same time.
  • Comfort working both independently and collaboratively in a fast-moving, changing environment.
  • Prior exposure to international expansion, including entry strategy, compliance, and cross-cultural coordination, is an advantage.

What We Offer

  • An experience that combines entrepreneurial energy with structured processes.
  • A chance to make a meaningful contribution to the growth of Africa’s e-commerce sector.
  • Membership in a professional, high-performing and dynamic team.
  • Strong opportunities for personal and career development, with a long-term goal of preparing future leaders.
