Head of Properties

Position Overview

The Head of Properties is a key department leader for a theatrical production team, operating under IATSE Local 15 jurisdiction. This role is full-time and requires working 100% on-site in Seattle, WA. The position reports to the Head Carpenter and the Technical Director, typically spanning the July to June season.

Primary Duties

• Lead and oversee the Props Department, managing dynamic team sizes according to production demands.
• Obtain, maintain, and create props necessary for opera productions.
• Manage procurement and upkeep of orchestra plots used in rehearsals and performances.
• Supervise backstage hospitality areas once transformed into performance spaces during technical residency.
• Develop and update detailed production prop lists, records, and operational documentation.
• Coordinate logistics with Seattle Symphony for instrument transportation between venues.

Candidate Profile

This role demands at least five years of relevant experience, preferably within musical theatrical settings such as ballet, musicals, symphony, or opera. Current I.A.T.S.E Local 15 membership, or affiliation with another I.A.T.S.E Local, is ideal; all employees are governed by the I.A.T.S.E Local 15 collective bargaining agreement irrespective of membership status. Firearm safety training is a plus. A valid Washington driver's license and clean driving record are mandatory.

• Ability to interpret and understand Safety Data Sheets and OSHA safety standards.
• Willingness and capacity to acquire new skills and adapt to various tools.
• Strong interpersonal capabilities for managing teams and collaborating cross-functionally.
• Technical know-how including sewing, woodworking, crafting, and reading technical drawings.

Physical Requirements

• Capability to lift and move up to 40 pounds independently and heavier items with assistance.
• Ability to stand, walk, balance, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and climb ladders.
• Effective communication via voice and radio systems.
• Use of hands and fingers for detailed tasks.
• Visual acuity including close, distance, peripheral vision, depth perception, and focus adjustment in low lighting prevalent backstage.

Work Conditions and Schedule

Work occurs primarily indoors amid moderate to high noise environments due to power tools and stage lighting. Scheduling is variable based on production cycles, including pre-production, load-ins, rehearsals, performances, and load-outs. Evening and weekend availability is essential, with overtime common during active production periods. Frequent errands across the Seattle area are required, utilizing either a box truck or personal vehicle, with mileage reimbursement provided for personal vehicle use.

Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a background check. Benefits include health and welfare contributions (10% of gross wages), retirement plan contributions (7% of gross wages), and vacation pay (5% of gross wages for employees working 200+ hours annually).
