Role Overview
The Head of Primary is a full-time leadership position based in Lusaka with a hybrid working arrangement, combining on-site school leadership with the flexibility to handle some planning and administrative work from home. The role is responsible for guiding the daily functioning of the primary section, ensuring effective curriculum delivery, maintaining high standards in teaching and learning, and supporting a positive student experience. The position also involves managing and mentoring primary teachers, observing lessons, giving constructive feedback, and supporting ongoing professional growth.
Working closely with the wider school leadership team, the Head of Primary will help shape academic programs, track student progress, and strengthen assessment and reporting processes. The role also covers timetable coordination, parent communication, student wellbeing, behavior support, and ensuring that all practices remain aligned with the school’s international standards and internal policies.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the primary section’s day-to-day operations and ensure smooth academic delivery.
- Oversee curriculum implementation and confirm that teaching and assessment are aligned with international expectations.
- Support, coach, and evaluate primary teachers through classroom observation and feedback.
- Plan and facilitate staff development initiatives and professional learning opportunities.
- Work with school leadership to improve academic programs and monitor learner outcomes.
- Review student progress, assessment data, and reporting practices to maintain quality and consistency.
- Manage timetables and support effective scheduling across the primary section.
- Maintain active communication with parents and guardians and address student-related concerns.
- Support student welfare, behavior management, safeguarding, and a respectful school culture.
- Contribute to the school’s long-term goals and ensure compliance with policies and standards.
Candidate Profile
- Significant leadership experience in a primary or elementary school, preferably in an international or multicultural setting.
- Strong ability to design and implement curriculum while aligning learning and assessment with international education standards.
- Experience mentoring teachers, building staff capacity, and managing performance discussions.
- Excellent communication and relationship-building skills for working with students, families, colleagues, and outside stakeholders.
- Background in primary teaching with sound classroom management and inclusive teaching approaches.
- Strong administrative and organizational abilities, including timetable planning, report preparation, and use of basic digital school tools.
- Clear commitment to safeguarding, student wellbeing, and a safe, positive, and respectful learning environment.
- Bachelor’s degree in Education or a related discipline is required; a postgraduate qualification in Educational Leadership or a similar area is a plus.
- Comfort with flexible or hybrid learning models and willingness to use educational technology where useful.
- Ability to collaborate effectively, adapt to change, and contribute to strategic school development.
Work Arrangement
This role is hybrid, with a combination of on-campus leadership duties and some remote time for planning and administrative tasks.
