Role Summary
The Head of Library Services is a full-time remote leadership position responsible for shaping, running, and improving the organization’s library and information services. The role covers both physical and digital collections, including policy setting for acquisition, cataloguing, classification, and access. It also ensures that library resources effectively support learning and research across the business.
In this position, you will lead a team of library professionals, set priorities, track performance, and build a service-focused environment for staff, learners, and other stakeholders. The job also involves handling information retrieval and research support, overseeing archives and records, introducing digital library tools, maintaining knowledge management systems, and making sure all activities comply with applicable legal and professional requirements. Close collaboration with academic, training, and business teams is essential to align services with wider organizational objectives and support continuous development.
Responsibilities
- Define and guide the strategic direction of library and information services.
- Oversee the day-to-day operation and development of physical and digital collections.
- Create and maintain policies and standards for acquisition, cataloguing, classification, and access.
- Ensure library resources meet learning and research needs across the organization.
- Lead, assign work to, and monitor the performance of library staff.
- Promote a customer-focused service culture for employees, learners, and stakeholders.
- Support information retrieval, reference, and research requests.
- Manage archives, records retention, and preservation of both physical and electronic materials.
- Implement and improve digital library solutions and knowledge management systems.
- Ensure adherence to relevant legal, regulatory, and professional standards.
- Work with academic, training, and business units to align library services with organizational priorities.
Requirements
- Deep knowledge of library services and library science, including collection development, cataloguing, classification, and user support.
- Demonstrated experience in library management, including planning, policy creation, budgeting, and people leadership.
- Background in archives, records management, retention practices, and preservation of both print and digital content.
- Strong research capability, including database searching, information retrieval, and evidence-based support.
- A degree in Library and Information Science or a closely related discipline; a postgraduate qualification is beneficial.
- Experience working with digital libraries, online databases, and knowledge platforms in a remote or distributed setting.
- Excellent communication, stakeholder engagement, and training abilities.
- Ability to work independently, manage several priorities at once, and deliver outcomes in a virtual team environment.
