Job description

About the Company

Martie is a shopping platform online that helps people buy quality products at lower prices while reducing waste. It partners directly with consumer brands to move excess inventory — items that are still perfectly usable but may be unsold because of packaging updates, label dates, or planning errors — and makes them available to customers at discounts of up to 80% off retail. The company has been featured in The New Yorker, The Strategist, and Eater.

Role Overview

This full-time, on-site role in Los Angeles is for a Head of Finance & Operations who will own the company’s financial and operational foundation. Reporting to the CEO and working closely with the founders and Board, you will act as the internal leader connecting the fractional CFO and external accounting team with overall business strategy and execution.

The position is focused on managing external partners rather than replacing them. You will oversee performance across the fractional CFO, accounting team, 3PL, freight providers, and carrier partners to keep the business efficient, disciplined, and scalable. The role combines financial planning, cash management, vendor negotiations, logistics oversight, board reporting, and continuous process improvement.

Key Responsibilities

You will be responsible for the business’s day-to-day financial health and operational performance, while identifying ways to improve systems, margins, and scale.

  • Oversee financial planning, modeling, forecasting, and reporting in partnership with the fractional CFO.
  • Maintain the 13-week cash forecast, annual operating plan, and board-level financial materials so they remain accurate and ready for decisions.
  • Act as the main internal contact for the external accounting team handling AP and AR, setting expectations and reviewing output.
  • Ensure vendor payment continuity, reconciliation processes, and open accounting items are handled cleanly.
  • Manage treasury, liquidity, and working capital, including inventory cash conversion efficiency.
  • Handle chargebacks, fraud, and AR exposure in coordination with accounting.
  • Lead financial workstreams for future fundraising and assess inventory financing, working-capital lines, covenant compliance, and lender relationships.
  • Negotiate and manage contracts for payment processing, banking, fulfillment, software, insurance, and other key vendors.
  • Own 3PL and fulfillment performance, including service levels, escalations, cost control, and warehouse partner accountability.
  • Drive weekly business reviews, OKRs, and cross-functional issue resolution across sourcing, fulfillment, and customer experience.
  • Serve as the point person for payroll, benefits, employment compliance, legal, tax, regulatory, and insurance partners.
  • Coordinate with outside counsel, auditors, and accountants as needed.

Requirements

  • Background in finance and/or operations leadership, either at the head-of-function level or as an operator ready for broader ownership.
  • Prior work in DTC, e-commerce, CPG, or grocery, with familiarity with inventory-led P&Ls, contribution margin, and working capital dynamics.
  • Experience creating financial models from the ground up and using them in a weekly operating cadence, plus preparing board materials.
  • Comfort managing cash, AP/AR, treasury, and other core back-office processes.
  • Experience supporting equity or debt fundraising; exposure to inventory financing or working-capital facilities is an advantage.
  • Experience evaluating and rolling out systems such as ERP, FP&A, inventory, or HRIS tools, along with strong vendor negotiation skills.
  • Strong understanding of GAAP, inventory accounting, and modern finance/operations software.
  • Ability to explain financial matters clearly to non-finance stakeholders.
  • Comfort working through ambiguity and switching between strategy and hands-on execution in a fast-moving environment.
  • Genuine alignment with the company’s mission.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, Business, or a related discipline is required.
  • MBA, CPA, or CFA is strongly preferred.

What We Offer

  • A leadership role with direct influence over finance, operations, and board-level reporting at a mission-driven company.
  • The opportunity to build the finance and operations function from the ground up and help shape future scale.
  • A leadership culture centered on rigor, transparency, speed, and purpose.
