Job description

About Moniepoint Kenya

Moniepoint stands as Africa's premier business payments and banking platform, empowering enterprises by providing comprehensive solutions including payments, banking services, credit access, and business management tools. After establishing Nigeria's most dependable business banking infrastructure, the company is now making a strategic move into Kenya—its inaugural market outside Nigeria and East Africa's flagship entry.

Kenya represents an ambitious and targeted opportunity due to its advanced financial market, the world's leading mobile money ecosystem, and a dynamic SME sector underserved by current financial institutions. Moniepoint is committed to succeeding here, with this role spearheading the commercial efforts.

Role Overview

The Head of Business for Kenya will serve as the top commercial executive, directly reporting to the Country CEO. This position holds comprehensive accountability for customer satisfaction, market share, revenue generation, and cost management. It encompasses full general management duties within the commercial spectrum, including strategy development, team leadership, and overseeing the entire product range's commercial performance to achieve business objectives in Kenya.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead Kenya's commercial Objectives and Key Results (OKRs) focusing on enhancing customer satisfaction, expanding market share, and optimizing profitability.
  • Develop and implement competitive market strategies and prioritize the product portfolio to ensure organizational accountability and success.
  • Supervise and mentor a team of Business Leads responsible for individual product lines, guiding goal-setting and performance assessments.
  • Oversee Business Leads to effectively manage product lines such as payment acceptance, lending services, savings, card issuance, and payment issuing.
  • Create and execute go-to-market strategies grounded in thorough customer insights and competitor analysis within the Kenyan market.
  • Conduct competitive intelligence to discover market opportunities and formulate a resilient winning strategy.
  • Drive customer growth through acquisition, retention, and engagement programs specifically targeting merchants and SMEs.
  • Design cross-selling and upselling initiatives to increase customer lifetime value.
  • Manage partnerships with agent networks, aggregators, B2B channels, and integration partners to bolster business expansion.
  • Ensure disciplined commercial operations management by owning data analytics, dashboard metrics, and evidence-driven decision processes.

Experience and Qualifications

  • Between 10 to 20 years of progressive professional experience including senior roles with P&L management responsibility.
  • Proven capability in leading large, multifunctional commercial teams.
  • Background in technology companies, ideally fintech or digital financial services sectors.
  • Strong familiarity with Kenyan or East African markets is highly desirable.
  • Track record demonstrating success in achieving scalable commercial growth within competitive landscapes.
  • Experience in traditional banking is not mandatory.

Essential Skills and Attributes

  • Entrepreneurial spirit with a strong sense of ownership, urgency, and accountability for outcomes.
  • Ability to conceptualize strategies from fundamental principles tailored to local market peculiarities rather than generic playbooks.
  • Advanced analytical skills for data interpretation and making logic-based decisions.
  • Competence in navigating ambiguous environments and making swift decisions.
  • Strong leadership in cultivating a high-performance commercial culture with excellent hiring and coaching abilities.
  • Skilled in managing and developing senior business leaders to achieve exceptional performance standards.
  • Intellectual rigor and resilience required to excel in challenging and high-demand market conditions.

Success Measures

  • Consistently achieve or surpass commercial OKRs related to customer satisfaction, market presence, and profitability.
  • Establish a robust commercial structure driven by data, insights, and evidence-based strategies.
  • Create sustainable competitive advantages over local banks, mobile money platforms, and emerging challengers.
  • Ensure operational excellence across all product lines, meeting their targeted lifecycle milestones.

Why Join Moniepoint Kenya

  • Opportunity to exercise significant autonomy and have a profound impact leading the company’s East African market entry.
  • Access to substantial resources and a scalable proven business model from a well-funded organization.
  • Contribute to transforming the financial services landscape for businesses in Kenya and the broader East African region.
