Job description

Overview

Al Jazeera Media Network is seeking a Head of Automation to lead the automated studio production and gallery directing segment. The role requires extensive expertise in managing automated broadcast operations, leading teams, and ensuring seamless production workflows.

Core Responsibilities

  • Ensure uniformity and centralized workflows for automation across all news and program galleries.
  • Develop, enforce, and manage policies and procedures for the automation department.
  • Oversee on-air automation output during live news and prerecorded shows, including the coordination of video feeds, camera angles, and graphics.
  • Collaborate closely with Newsroom, Programmes, and Creative teams to define and technically realize the channel's visual style via automation systems.
  • Maintain accurate coordination of show rundowns with the Newsroom Computer System (NRCS).
  • Implement immediate backup operations when failures occur to avoid interruptions in broadcast.
  • Promote problem solving, coordination, and effective communication between senior management and the production teams.
  • Provide leadership, motivation, and management of the automation operations teams.
  • Coordinate with Broadcast Engineering to ensure maintenance and proper functioning of studio automation equipment.
  • Design and maintain effective automation workflows, ensuring business continuity and disaster recovery preparedness.
  • Coach and develop team members through mentoring and training initiatives.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Participate in meetings with leadership and direct reports to align team objectives.
  • Set performance goals and conduct annual evaluations for automation staff.
  • Identify and coordinate training needs to enhance team skills annually.
  • Monitor key performance indicators and prepare regular reports on operational status.
  • Lead recruitment efforts to maintain staffing and operational continuity.
  • Coordinate with stakeholders during special broadcasts and events to guarantee technical and automation readiness.
  • Assist Newsgathering and Planning teams with budgeting support for production operations.
  • Perform other relevant duties within the media network as required.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in film, directing, media, communications, graphics, or a closely related discipline; additional diplomas or certificates are advantageous.

Experience

  • At least 10 years of professional experience in broadcast news or associated areas, including minimum 5 years in a senior automation or directing position within a news production control environment.
