Head of Accounting (m/f/d)

Role Summary

We are looking for a Head of Accounting to oversee Accounting, ERP systems, and Compliance for our German subsidiary (GmbH). This leadership position works in close cooperation with the Head of Finance and also handles selected group-level (Konzern) accounting responsibilities. The role involves driving precise financial reporting, managing risks, improving accounting processes, leading a team of 2-3 professionals, and supporting strategic decisions such as group restructuring and financing efforts.

Key Responsibilities

• Manage the GmbH's financial records in compliance with German HGB standards and ensure timely delivery of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports.
• Handle selected group accounting matters, including consolidation input, restructuring transactions, and intercompany activities across multiple entities.
• Review reconciliation of intercompany accounts and fixed asset accounting done by the team.
• Take full charge of cash management and bank account setup, along with ensuring compliance related to these areas.
• Enhance ERP booking procedures (NetSuite) to ensure rapid month-end closing.
• Optimize workflows and serve as system owner for Spendesk and month-end reconciliation tools.
• Leverage a strong interest in AI to automate accounting processes maximally via AI-supported tools.
• Assess and deploy financial software solutions and automation technologies.
• Establish and maintain accounting policies adhering to German standards.
• Support budgeting and forecasting by providing variance analysis and strategic insights.
• Ensure complete compliance with German tax laws including VAT, corporate tax, and trade tax filing obligations.
• Assist external audits, tax advisors, and meet requirements of regulatory bodies.
• Implement and uphold internal control and risk management procedures.
• Adhere to GDPR requirements in all financial operations.
• Lead, mentor, and develop a team of 2-3 accounting staff, setting clear targets and providing ongoing coaching.
• Cultivate a collaborative and high-achieving accounting department culture.
• Manage recruitment, training, and career advancement for accounting personnel.
• Collaborate with senior leadership on strategic projects including corporate restructuring and financing.
• Work with international and group finance teams to harmonize accounting practices across entities.
• Provide financial expertise to support business development, investment, and M&A activities.
• Assist with mergers & acquisitions and due diligence when required.

Candidate Profile

• Certified German Accountant (Bilanzbuchhalter) or Master's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration or equivalent.
• Deep familiarity with German GAAP (HGB) and knowledge of consolidation at the group level.
• At least 7-10 years of advancing accounting experience with 3-5 years in a leadership capacity.
• Strong expertise in German accounting standards and tax regulations.
• Proven capability to manage and grow accounting teams.
• Proficiency with financial ERP systems.
• Fluent in German (native-level) and strong English skills.
• Advanced skills in Excel and financial modeling.
• Keen interest and experience in leveraging AI and automation for accounting processes.
• Experience in multinational corporations or German subsidiaries of international companies.
• Background in the technology/software sector, including knowledge of SaaS accounting practices such as license revenue recognition and deferrals. Experience at Big Four firms (Manager level) is advantageous.
• Familiarity with NetSuite or similar cloud ERP solutions.
• Strong project and change management aptitude.
• Experience leading digital transformation and automation in accounting.

Additional Qualifications

• CPA, ACCA or international certifications are a plus.
• Knowledge of IFRS and US GAAP for consolidations is beneficial.
• Excellent communication and presentation skills for senior stakeholders.
• Experience with debt refinancing, restructuring, or group financing projects is desirable.
