Position Purpose
The Head Cook is entrusted with overseeing all food-related operations for Mt. Waddington Community Ministries, including meal programs, shelter services, Centre of Hope initiatives, and community events. The role requires adherence to Canada’s Food Guide, dietician-approved menus, and strict compliance with food safety regulations.
Primary Responsibilities
- Prepare and serve wholesome meals in line with Canada’s Food Guide and approved menus.
- Ensure food handling, preparation, and storage practices meet Food Safe standards.
- Maintain cleanliness, health, and safety within kitchen and food preparation areas.
- Monitor and uphold safety and security protocols for food and equipment.
- Keep freezers, refrigerators, stoves, and surfaces consistently sanitized.
- Utilize diverse cooking techniques, including boiling, steaming, roasting, grilling, frying, and others to prepare menu items.
- Rotate food inventory every three days to ensure freshness and safety.
- Monitor and record food temperatures, considering time spent in the danger zone.
- Label, date, cover, and properly organize items stored in refrigeration units.
- Conduct and document daily temperature audits for refrigerators and freezers at shift start and end.
- Observe hygiene standards including Universal Precautions for safety.
- Innovate efficient ways to minimize food wastage.
- Perform additional related duties as assigned.
Administrative Duties
- Submit incident and injury reports as necessary.
- Maintain required monthly records and compliance logs aligned with health and safety regulations.
- Participate actively in monthly staff meetings.
- Assist in tracking meal counts and volunteer hours, ensuring accurate volunteer time records.
- Attend required job-related training sessions.
Qualifications and Experience
- Completion of secondary education (high school or equivalent) plus up to six months of post-secondary training or specialized courses in Food Services.
- Food Safe Level 1 certification mandatory; Level 2 considered advantageous.
- Occupational First Aid Level 1 certification preferred.
- Minimum two years’ relevant experience, including at least one year in institutional kitchen settings.
- Strong knowledge of food safety and safe work practices.
- Valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
- Capability to perform physical tasks such as lifting items up to 40 pounds and prolonged standing.
- Competence in moderate computer use required for reporting and record keeping.
- Recommended immunizations: Hepatitis B and Tuberculosis vaccinations.

Additional Requirements
- Successful candidates must submit a Criminal Record Check including Vulnerable Sector Screening.

Working Hours and Conditions
The position is scheduled Wednesday through Sunday, from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, totaling 40 hours weekly. A three-month probationary period applies, after which full-time benefits are provided. The role requires physical endurance for standing, lifting, cutting, chopping, and transporting supplies.
Compensation
The salary range for this role is from $20.09 to $25.11 per hour, with a maximum ceiling of $30.13. Placement within this range depends on market conditions, internal equity, and candidate qualifications.
