Job description
Role overview
Zego is hiring a product leader who operates with an owner’s mindset and can take full command of a product vertical from end to end. The remit is broad: product direction, financial performance, team leadership, and measurable business outcomes. This is a hands-on building role, not a coordination role.
You will lead one of the company’s core verticals, representing a business of roughly £50 million in P&L. Your focus will span growth, product quality, and the complete customer journey within that area. You will manage dedicated growth squads directly while partnering with central platform teams to improve shared capabilities.
The company works at the crossroads of insurance and technology. Prior experience in insurance is not required, but a strong desire to solve meaningful problems for customers who rely on the product is essential.
What you will own
Full product ownership: You will guide the vertical from discovery through launch and beyond. That includes setting direction, shaping the vision, deciding what gets built, and standing behind the results.
P&L accountability: You will take responsibility for revenue, margin, loss ratio, and growth. You should understand the direction of the numbers, know what is driving them, and act proactively.
Squad leadership: You will directly lead a small number of growth-oriented squads. Your job is to set priorities, clear obstacles quickly, and create a sense of purpose in the team’s work.
Cross-functional influence: Because central platform teams are shared, you must secure their attention through strong reasoning, trust, and clarity. The role calls for influence without politics.
Customer and market insight: You will stay close to the world of your vertical, learning how operators work, what customers struggle with daily, and what improvements would make a real difference. The expectation is genuine insight, not surface-level research.
What we are looking for
Strong product judgment: You should have sharp instincts for what helps customers and a focus on outcomes rather than output. You challenge roadmaps that do not connect to meaningful metrics.
Commercial fluency: You need to be comfortable discussing P&L, identifying where value is being lost, and deciding what matters most. A finance conversation should feel natural, not intimidating.
Data-driven thinking: You will form hypotheses, design experiments, and dig into funnel metrics and conversion performance. You should be active in analytics discussions, not passive.
Technical credibility: You should earn the respect of engineers, understand trade-offs, have views on build-versus-buy, and be able to write a clear and focused specification. Engineering experience is not mandatory, but technical detail cannot be vague.
Clear narrative and vision: You should be able to produce a persuasive one-pager, align a squad around a shared north star, and communicate effectively with senior leaders and the board.
People leadership: You must give direct, honest feedback and create an environment where the team can do its best work.
Backgrounds that stand out
- Founders with a strong product background
- Vice Presidents or Group Product Managers from fintech or marketplace businesses
- Product leaders who have progressed into P&L ownership
What this is not
This is not a process-management or portfolio-coordination position. The ideal person still enjoys building and has either been pushed by ambition or circumstance into owning the whole product and business, and found that responsibility energising.
