Job description
About Gallagher
Gallagher is driven by a purpose to safeguard what is most valuable. With a focus on securing critical environments worldwide and advancing technology for farmers, joining Gallagher means contributing to impactful work. This role offers the chance to be part of a collaborative and high-performing Legal & Risk team that works in partnership with company leaders to foster continuous innovation and growth, alongside a culture that encourages flexibility and ongoing development.
Opportunity Overview
As Gallagher grows its global footprint and enhances its use of AI, SaaS, and digital tools, we seek a seasoned legal advisor to support confident innovation and global expansion. This position bridges legal, technology, and commercial functions, working with leaders across Product, Information Services, Risk, and Commercial teams to ensure that privacy, data protection, and responsible AI principles are integrated early in projects rather than last-minute additions.
This role transcends traditional compliance, enabling the company to adopt AI and emerging technologies responsibly, balancing innovation, business goals, and privacy responsibilities. Rather than only flagging risks, the role involves creating practical frameworks that give teams the freedom to advance projects with assurance.
Key Responsibilities
- Offer expert guidance on privacy, data governance, and responsible AI for strategic business initiatives.
- Collaborate with Product teams to implement privacy by design principles in development.
- Facilitate the deployment of new technologies while overseeing privacy and regulatory complexities.
- Lead assessments of privacy impacts whenever information usage evolves or new solutions arise.
- Design governance frameworks and procedures that support innovation and scalability.
- Advise on international privacy laws, compliance for market expansions, and cross-border data issues.
Candidate Profile
The ideal candidate is passionate about addressing complex tech and data issues by partnering early with stakeholders, aligning with commercial goals, and crafting practical solutions to balance privacy requirements and innovation advancement. You bring a pragmatic and commercially aware mindset, strong relationship-building abilities, and confidence to assertively influence key decisions.
Required Qualifications and Experience
- In-depth knowledge of privacy laws, especially GDPR, and privacy regulations in the US, New Zealand, and Australia.
- Proven experience advising on privacy or data protection in sizeable, multifaceted organisations.
- A background with SaaS, software, technology products, or digital transformation projects.
- Excellent stakeholder management and influential communication skills across legal, technology, and commercial functions.
- Capability to interpret complex regulatory demands into actionable business strategies.
- Desirable experience includes AI governance, data governance, customer assurance or involvement with emerging tech policies.
- Experience working with global, multi-jurisdictional organisations is highly advantageous.
Additional Benefits
- Flexible work arrangements and free parking.
- Onsite subsidised café and access to excellent local dining options.
- Life and Disability Insurance coverage.
- A supportive, inclusive in-house Legal team with strong leadership.
- Boost App membership and staff discounts at various New Zealand retailers.
- Frequent team events and opportunities to engage with guest speakers and cross-company networking.
