Genetic Counselor - Reproductive - Medical Genetics

Role Overview

This is a full-time reproductive genetic counseling role supporting a busy, varied patient population. The position focuses on preconception and prenatal counseling for patients referred for multiple clinical reasons, including advanced maternal age, abnormal maternal serum screening or NIPT findings, ultrasound anomalies, elevated risk for gene, chromosome, or multifactorial conditions, positive personal or family history of genetic disease, carrier screening results, and teratogen exposure concerns.

The role requires comprehensive risk assessment and discussion of the benefits, limitations, and risks of both invasive and non-invasive testing, as well as pre-implantation genetic screening/diagnosis and other reproductive choices such as donor gametes and adoption, when clinically appropriate. The counselor will join a collaborative team of reproductive genetic counselors and clinical geneticists at the main Mount Sinai campus.

Responsibilities

• Deliver genetic counseling and patient education for pregnancy-related and preconception concerns, including teratogen exposure, abnormal ultrasound findings, abnormal bloodwork, carrier findings, advanced parental age, complex personal/pregnancy/family history, fetal number concerns, pregnancy termination, prenatal diagnostic and screening options, pre-implantation genetic diagnosis, and sperm/ovum donation.
• Provide ongoing counseling and follow-up care through a hybrid workflow that includes in-person appointments and some telehealth visits; telehealth may be conducted from a HIPAA-compliant home setting when needed and may change over time.
• Guide and oversee Master’s-level genetic counseling students, fellows, residents, and medical students during reproductive counseling rotations.
• Prepare chart documentation, patient summary correspondence, and physician consultation letters.
• Support administrative staff with timely scheduling by confirming referral appropriateness and helping ensure patients are routed quickly to the right counselor or physician.
• Review and explain carrier screening and prenatal testing results for physicians and patients.
• Respond to frequent physician calls requesting advice on patient management, including test interpretation, pregnancy-related genetic concerns, family history questions, available screening and diagnostic options, medical indications for counseling/testing, and information on rare and common genetic or chromosome disorders.
• Coordinate specimen collection, shipment, tracking, and billing matters for specialized testing sent to outside laboratories, including studies for single-gene disorders such as Noonan syndrome, skeletal dysplasia, WES, and WGS.
• Act as a liaison among diagnostic laboratories and referring physicians by sharing normal, inconclusive, and abnormal results, arranging follow-up testing or counseling, clarifying specimen needs, and communicating billing details for both existing and newly referred patients.
• Provide genetics education to medical students, graduate students, residents, and other learners.

Requirements

• At least 2 years of genetic counseling experience is required; 5 or more years is preferred.
• Board certification in genetic counseling must be obtained within 3 years of completing a Genetic Counseling Program.
• Spanish fluency is preferred.

Compensation

The posted annual salary range for this position is $85,000 to $131,538. Actual pay may vary based on experience, education, and operational needs. This range does not include bonuses, incentive pay, differentials, or other compensation and benefits.
