About the Hotel
Situated in Christchurch, New Zealand’s third-largest city and largest in the Canterbury region, Sheraton Christchurch offers 240 guest rooms, 305 square meters of event space, and three distinctive dining venues.
Role Overview
This role serves as the chief strategic leader overseeing all facets of the hotel's operations. Responsibilities include enhancing guest and staff satisfaction, managing human resources, optimizing financial results, and driving sales and revenue growth. The General Manager ensures alignment with Marriott International and property owners by implementing service strategies focused on exceeding guest expectations, boosting profitability, and expanding market share. Leadership accountability, personal professional development of the management team, and independent sales initiatives are key focuses. The role also emphasizes building strong owner relationships and maintaining active community involvement.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and execute business strategies aligned with industry trends to maximize guest satisfaction, profitability, and market positioning.
- Lead the property leadership team in implementing business plans, monitoring success metrics, and adopting innovative ideas to improve operations.
- Collaborate closely with Sales and Marketing to generate new leads, tailor approaches, and fully leverage Marriott’s demand systems.
- Coach and develop the Executive Committee and broader management to foster a high-performing and cohesive team environment.
- Analyze diverse business data, including market share and financials, to inform strategic decisions and maintain budget compliance.
- Promote fair employee treatment, open communication, and engagement through visible leadership and partnership with HR.
- Work with Revenue Management to devise dynamic pricing and occupancy strategies that support market positioning and profitability.
- Cultivate strong rapport with property owners via proactive communication and detailed performance reporting, balancing ownership and brand interests.
- Engage regularly with guests and community stakeholders to enhance the hotel’s image, respond to feedback, and ensure exceptional service delivery.
- Ensure compliance with all relevant legal, safety, and brand standards through regular quality audits and employee training.
Candidacy Requirements
- Minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in the hospitality sector, including prior roles as General Manager or Hotel Manager at hotels of similar or larger scale.
- Comprehensive expertise in food and beverage, event and rooms operations, revenue and human resource management, strategic planning, budgeting, contract negotiation, SOPs, and project oversight.
- Proven experience navigating matrix organizations and leveraging centralized resources effectively.
- Strong capability to simultaneously manage multiple projects and deliver measurable results under complex conditions.
- Ability to analyze business trends, mitigate risks, and implement new programs enhancing multi-unit business performance.
- Established history of fostering positive and influential relationships with property owners.
- Exceptional communication skills across verbal, written, listening, and presentation formats, complemented by negotiation and consensus-building capabilities.
- Strong problem-solving skills and a willingness to innovate.
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent relevant work experience.

- Creative execution of strategy to maximize guest experience and revenue within brand standards.
- Organizational acuity coupled with financial management skills, including P&L analysis, budgeting, forecasting, and capital planning.
- Ability to adapt business strategies based on market intelligence and manage customer loyalty and engagement.
- Initiative in taking constructive actions independently and building networks to expand business opportunities.
- Proven talent and manpower management skills with a focus on change management and associate relations.
