Role overview

The Gateway Agent supports the Station Supervisor or Lead Operations team by managing inbound and outbound material flow and coordinating customs clearance for DHL customers. The role focuses on accurate shipment handling, document verification, customs support, and timely communication with internal teams, security, and customs authorities.

Key duties

  • Collect inbound material from the appropriate airlines carrying express shipments and DHL-consigned cargo, then scan it in line with GSOP business rules.
  • Review import and export paperwork to confirm shipment details are correct.
  • Escalate any inconsistencies found in inbound or outbound materials to management and security.
  • Support the classification of goods into the correct tariff or import-fee category using international tariff coding systems or local regulatory standards.
  • Assist in working out duties and related tax charges where needed.
  • Make sure every incoming and outgoing shipment receives the correct checkpoint scan in the proper sequence.
  • Maintain accurate bond logs and historical tangible records for clearance documentation using DHL systems such as ACA.
  • Share load, volume, and discrepancy updates by phone, email, flight alerts through CALMS, and manifest services.
  • Prepare customs paperwork and act as a point of contact with customs personnel.
  • Track the location of all manifest-listed shipments and organize materials into the assigned areas.
  • Confirm the classification of goods for duty or tariff assessment.
  • Record overcharges and any shipment damage in tangible files.
  • Move and sort shipments to the DHL Service Center.
  • Help resolve customs delays within BOS Country Target.
  • Calculate customs entries accurately and inform internal and external customers about duty amounts.
  • Support outbound processing at the Service Center and Gateway.
  • Assist with arranging delivery and pickup of palletized materials as directed by management.
  • Carry out other job-related tasks as required.

Skills and qualifications

  • Associate degree in Logistics, or completion of high school or an equivalent qualification.
  • At least 1 year of experience in a customs-related role or customs brokerage.
  • Certification for handling dangerous goods.
  • Practical understanding of tariff rules and rates.
  • Comfort using computers and related information systems.
  • Valid general driver’s license.
  • Clean police record.
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills.

Additional requirements

The role also calls for careful record keeping, coordination across internal teams and external authorities, and the ability to manage shipment discrepancies and customs-related issues efficiently.
