Role overview

We are looking for experienced freelance Vectorworks draftspersons based in the United States to support upcoming project-based work in New York, NY. This opportunity is for contract-style freelance assignments and is not a full-time hiring role.

The draftsperson will prepare and manage drawings for assigned projects while working under the direction of a Technical Director, Technical Producer, or Project Lead. The work centers on 2D and 3D drafting for live entertainment productions, including building accurate Vectorworks files and adding show components.

Key responsibilities

  • Translate major show ideas and ground plans into 3D models that clearly communicate scale, form, and design intent to clients.
  • Develop and update the 2D ground plan throughout the project, including on-site change tracking and preparation of as-built drawings.
  • Create site plans, ground plans, and any other layouts or technical details needed for the job.
  • Produce 2D and 3D drawings of individual scenic elements for fabrication.
  • Attend meetings and participate in site surveys with clients and both internal and external collaborators when needed.

Required background and working style

  • A bachelor’s degree or at least 2 to 3 years of drafting experience in live events, entertainment, theater, touring concerts, or production.
  • Strong drafting ability with all work completed in Vectorworks.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, along with strong interpersonal skills.
  • A positive, proactive attitude and the ability to contribute in a fast-moving environment.
  • Prior work on large-scale events, such as mega events in professional sports, live entertainment, festivals, or similar, is preferred.
  • Availability for irregular schedules, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, depending on event needs.
  • Commitment to established TAIT standards and specifications.
  • Ability to take initiative, handle multiple tasks, and remain effective under pressure.
  • Professional judgment, discretion, diplomacy, confidentiality, and tact in demanding situations.
  • Capacity to work independently and also collaborate effectively in a team.
  • Highly organized, detail-focused, and thorough in execution.

Additional information

This role is intended for freelance project work only. It is open to U.S.-based candidates and may involve coordination with multiple stakeholders during live entertainment production planning and execution.
