Job Overview
This position, classified under Local 155 - Cafe, reports to the Food Service Director or a designated representative. It is a full-time role operating Monday through Friday, requiring 6.5 hours daily over a 10-month tenure with a minimum of 180 working days per year. The role involves various duties in food service operations and support.
Key Responsibilities
- Maintain compliance with regulations governing the National School Lunch, School Breakfast, Fresh Fruit & Vegetable, and CACFP programs.
- Carry out routine food preparation tasks following established recipes, production records, and portion guidelines, including assembling sandwiches, slicing meats, heating prepared foods, chopping vegetables, preparing salads and fruit dishes, baking desserts or bread, temperature checks, portioning food, and meal packaging.
- Serve meals to students and staff adhering to meal counting and claiming procedures.
- Present food attractively while being mindful of quality and serving standards.
- Conduct cashier operations when required.
- Manage receiving, stocking, and rotation of food items and supplies; assist with inventory and daily production documentation.
- Ensure food safety and sanitation by following HACCP procedures, sanitation guidelines, student allergy policies, County Health Regulations, and district standards.
- Participate in cleaning and sanitizing food preparation and serving areas, including equipment maintenance; may include sweeping, mopping, and trash removal.
- Engage in professional development as directed.
- Provide courteous, professional service displaying a positive representation of the district and food service team.
Qualifications and Skills
- High school diploma or GED required; previous food service experience considered a plus.
- ServSafe certification is preferred.
- Ability to read and understand simple instructions, recipes, production and administrative forms.
- Effective communication skills for interaction with management, students, and staff.
- Basic arithmetic skills to perform counting, sorting, and verifying numbers.
- Familiarity with computer-based communication tools and ability to learn systems such as PrimeroEdge for cashiering and production records.
- Good organizational skills, ability to multitask, and work in compliance with district policies.
- Capable of lifting up to 50 pounds regularly and performing physical activities including standing, walking, stooping, squatting, reaching, and repetitive hand motions.
Work Environment
The environment is typically loud and humid, with exposure to sanitizing compounds and occasional contact with mechanical equipment and chemicals. There may be requirements to work on slippery surfaces and get wet occasionally. The role demands meeting strict deadlines and maintaining safety standards concerning students and co-workers.
Terms of Employment and Evaluation
This is a non-exempt position under the contract between Reading School District Local #155 and the Pennsylvania Joint Board United. Performance reviews occur annually following the district's policies for non-certificated personnel.
