Job description
About the Role
We are looking for a FOIA Paralegal to support the legal functions of a major federal agency. This full-time mid-level position involves thorough legal review and processing requests under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), as well as assisting with broader litigation support activities. Key Responsibilities
- Conduct comprehensive searches and analyze document sets to distinguish between responsive and non-responsive materials and screen for privileged information or FOIA exemptions.
- Redact sensitive content and apply coding to responsive documents.
- Perform legal research to support case preparation and document development.
- Prepare and draft a variety of legal documents.
Required Qualifications
- Possession of a paralegal certificate, Juris Doctor degree, or current enrollment in an ABA-accredited law school with at least one year completed.
- Minimum of one year litigation paralegal experience, with trial support experience considered advantageous.
- Proficiency or experience with eDiscovery tools such as Nuix Investigate, Relativity, or similar document review platforms is highly preferred.
- Experience handling and processing FOIA requests in accordance with relevant regulations.
- Strong knowledge of FOIA exemptions and application of FOIA laws.
- Competence in legal citation and ability to verify citations in legal motions and memoranda; familiarity with legal research databases like LEXIS and Westlaw for foundational research.
- Excellent written and verbal communication capabilities.
- Comfort with various computer applications, including word processing, databases for document and file management, spreadsheets, imaging software, and related hardware.
Additional Skills and Attributes
- Basic understanding of Electronically Stored Information (ESI) tools and eDiscovery procedures.
- Ability to consistently produce high-quality work under demanding conditions.
- Proficiency in English language skills including reading, writing, speaking, and comprehension.
- Capability to work autonomously with minimal supervision.
- Eligibility to obtain a government security clearance.
Preferred Experience
- Two years of experience using Nuix Investigate particularly for document review and tagging.
- Two years of experience processing FOIA requests for federal institutions.
- Fluency in statutory and regulatory frameworks governing FOIA responses.
