Overview
This role is based in Niceville, Florida and focuses on delivering critical care in the air for the surrounding community. The position offers the chance to work aboard advanced medical helicopters, providing intensive care support in a highly mobile environment while also receiving support for continued professional learning. Candidates should bring recent critical care experience and be open to an exciting, fast-moving clinical setting.
Role Summary
The flight nurse is accountable for delivering advanced nursing and critical care services in line with the medical director’s protocols and the clinical standards of the program. The role includes assessing injuries or illnesses, determining care priorities, and ensuring safe transport of critically ill or injured patients to the right facility while keeping safety at the center of every mission.
Key Duties
- Provide nursing care within scope from first patient contact until handoff at the receiving facility, and keep complete clinical records.
- Stay clinically current through ongoing lab and field learning, and share training needs with supervisors and education staff.
- Maintain required documentation for licensure, certifications, continuing education, aviation and safety training, OSHA, HIPAA, clinical rotations, and advanced procedures.
- Know how to use, care for, and help troubleshoot aircraft medical equipment and supplies, reporting failures promptly and keeping the aircraft stocked, orderly, and ready for rapid deployment.
- Participate as part of the flight crew in mission briefings, debriefings, pre-flight checks, and safety procedures, and assist the pilot with radio, navigation, and visual observation when requested.
- Support neonatal and pediatric transports as a flight resource and perform approved advanced procedures when authorized.
- Take part in patient and referring-facility follow-up, as well as outreach, marketing, and educational activities.
- Serve as a preceptor for new hires and students when assigned and help communicate program goals and objectives.
- Contribute regularly to team meetings, projects, committees, research, and publication opportunities.
- Complete other assigned duties as needed.
Working Conditions and Additional Requirements
- Regular attendance is required.
- Approximately 5% of the role involves travel.
- The position has no supervisory responsibilities.
- All staff must follow company employment policies, and attendance is considered an essential function of the role where permitted by law.
Education and Experience
- Must be a graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
- A bachelor’s degree in a health-related field is preferred, though not mandatory.
- At least 3 years of recent critical care or emergency nursing experience within the last 5 years is required, or the level required by state or local EMS rules.
- Pre-hospital experience is preferred.
- Previous flight experience is beneficial but not required.
Operational and Safety Requirement
- As a member of the clinical flight crew, the employee’s weight must remain at or below 225 pounds, including an empty flight suit and boots.
Skills
The role calls for nursing practice skills aligned with the state scope of practice, along with advanced techniques approved by medical leadership. Strong collaboration, sound judgment, attention to detail, and the ability to prioritize in a high-pressure environment are essential. The nurse should be dependable, self-directed, comfortable with frequent change, and able to communicate clearly in both writing and speech. A flexible schedule, including overtime and a 24/7 on-call rotation, is also required.
Computer Skills
Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook is expected.
Licenses, Certifications, and Registrations
- Active RN license(s) in the state or states of practice.
- EMS or MICN certification/licensure, if required by state regulations.
- Current BLS/CPR for Healthcare Providers, ACLS, PALS or equivalent, and TPATC, TNCC, ITLS, or PHTLS advanced provider certification if required by state or county rules (AHA, ARC, or ASHI only where required).
- If the applicant does not currently hold trauma certification, the employer will provide the TPATC online course before new-hire orientation.
Additional Certification Requirements
- CFRN or CEN specialty certification must be obtained within 24 months of hire.
- Before finishing third-rider training, one approved advanced trauma credential is required: TPATC, TNCC, ATCN, TNATC, or a CAMTS-approved advanced trauma course.
- NRP certification must be completed before the end of third-rider orientation.
- NIMS training modules IS 100, 200, 700, and 800, plus HazMat, must be completed before the end of third-rider training.
