Position Overview

The Film Camp Mentor role involves guiding young students aged 9-14 in creating short films during weeklong summer camps hosted by SIFF. Mentors operate under the supervision of a Lead Instructor and contribute to maintaining an encouraging, inclusive, and safe learning environment.

Camp Dates and Schedule

• August 3-7 (9am-3pm): Stop Motion 1 for ages 9-11
• August 10-14 (9am-3pm): Stop Motion 2 for ages 12-14
• August 17-21 (9am-3pm): Science-Fiction camp for ages 9-11
• August 24-28 (9am-3pm): Horror camp for ages 12-14

Key Responsibilities

• Guide young filmmakers in developing creative solutions and skills throughout the camp weeks.
• Assist with writing, storyboarding, camera use, and film editing while encouraging campers' creativity.
• Ensure student safety at all times, including awareness beyond the assigned group.
• Report any needs for equipment maintenance promptly to leadership.
• Help foster a respectful, disciplined, and creative camp environment.
• Collaborate with the Lead Instructor and campers to establish and uphold behavior and collaboration norms.
• Promote inclusion in all group activities and production teams.
• Arrive by 8:30am to prepare, stay after 3:00pm until 3:30pm for cleanup and preparations.
• Communicate any student concerns or feedback efficiently with Lead Educator and parents as needed.
• Ensure all camp films are completed by Friday 2:15pm for projectionist handoff.
• Participate in end-of-week cleanup alongside SIFF Education staff.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• Ability to commit Monday to Friday, 8am – 4pm during camp weeks.
• Experience in creative film production and/or education.
• Successful completion of Washington State Background Check.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Experience working with youth formally or informally.
• Highly organized, self-driven, and motivated.
• Familiarity with filmmaking equipment, including handheld digital cameras.
• Proficient in using Final Cut Pro and capable of teaching basic editing skills to beginners.
• Dedicated to broadening access to arts education for individuals from diverse backgrounds and abilities.

Additional Information and Terms

• This position is a temporary, part-time contract role with onsite duties at Seattle locations including offices and theaters.

• Physical requirements include ability to interact with attendees, sit or stand for long periods, assist patrons physically, and lift up to 25 pounds.
