Job description
Role overview
Based in Swindon, this permanent facilities role is focused on keeping student living spaces safe, tidy and comfortable. You will work across the site to resolve maintenance problems, support day-to-day building care and help create a welcoming environment for residents.
Working pattern
This is a 37.5-hour role each week, spread over 5 days out of 7. Working hours are generally between 8:00am and 4:00pm, although part-time arrangements can be discussed.
Pay and contract
The salary range is £26,750 to £34,511 per year, with bonus and benefits included. The position is permanent.
Essential requirement
A full UK driving licence is required, as travel between sites is part of the role.
What you will do
You will partner with the Facilities Team Leader, colleagues and residents to handle repairs, respond to safety concerns and maintain high standards across the accommodation. No two days will be the same, and you may be fixing a door, dealing with an urgent issue or checking in with students.
Responsibilities
- Carry out routine and reactive maintenance work, including basic joinery, plastering, plumbing and electrical repairs, so buildings remain secure and well maintained.
- Support health and safety compliance by completing checks, reacting quickly to safety-related requests and following all relevant procedures.
- Provide friendly, effective service to students and colleagues by handling maintenance requests and feedback in a helpful and professional way.
- Record maintenance issues correctly in digital systems and carry out planned inspections, escalating remedial work to the relevant engineer when needed.
Candidate profile
The employer is open to different backgrounds and values attitude, curiosity and a willingness to learn. What matters most is your approach, your problem-solving mindset and your ability to contribute positively to student life.
Requirements
- Valid UK driving licence.
- Practical maintenance knowledge covering joinery, plastering, basic domestic plumbing and like-for-like electrical changes, with safe working and proper documentation.
- Understanding of health and safety legislation and the ability to follow legal and workplace standards.
- Experience in general maintenance and in roles involving direct contact with customers or service users.
- Strong communication and problem-solving skills, with the ability to work professionally with colleagues and other stakeholders.
Benefits
- Performance-related bonus paid twice a year.
- 25 days of annual leave plus bank holidays, with the option to buy up to 5 additional days and earn up to 5 more through long service.
- Pension contributions between 4% and 11%, depending on how much you save.
- Life assurance cover worth 4 times your salary.
- Share save scheme with access to discounted Unite Students shares.
- Enhanced family leave, including 18 weeks at full pay for birthing parents and 4 weeks for non-birthing parents.
- Medicash health cash plan for routine medical costs such as dental, optical and physiotherapy care.
- Employee Assistance Programme for support when needed.
- One paid volunteering day each year.
- Access to a discount platform for retail and hospitality services.
- 20% student rent discount at direct-let properties for your children, siblings, their children, or other dependants who are students.
- Access to a broad learning catalogue and essential training after joining.
