Overview

Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art is looking for a skilled exhibition designer to create and deliver imaginative exhibition environments for temporary shows, collection presentations, and interactive spaces for children across the Queensland Art Gallery and the Queensland Gallery of Modern Art.

The role focuses on developing display solutions that align with Gallery standards and project goals, collaborating closely with project teams, supporting project leaders and the Senior Exhibition Designer, and handling materials procurement, product research, and design-team administration.

Role purpose

This position exists to produce creative exhibition design outcomes for temporary exhibitions, collection displays, and children's interactive environments at the Queensland Art Gallery and the Queensland Gallery of Modern Art.

Key duties

  • Create exhibition spaces and visual art displays that reflect Gallery standards and meet project objectives.
  • Contribute as a team member on project-based work and assist project leaders and the Senior Exhibition Designer.
  • Manage material sourcing, product investigation, and administrative support tasks for the design group.

Design section teams

The Design Section at QAGOMA includes Workshop, Exhibition Design, Graphic Design, Installation, and Audio Visual and Lighting teams.

Working relationships

The role reports to a Project Lead and the Senior Exhibition Designer in the Exhibition Design Team. It also involves regular communication with Gallery staff and occasional contact with external parties such as artists, contractors, and representatives from state, national, and international galleries and arts organisations.

Work environment

The Design Section operates in a highly active exhibition calendar with firm deadlines and a strong focus on delivering high-quality results. Its in-house production capability supports ambitious, complex, and innovative projects through close collaboration across teams.

Technical requirements

A relevant tertiary qualification or degree in Interior Design, Industrial Design, or Architecture from a recognised institution, together with proven industry experience, is required. Strong Revit capability is also needed.
