Position Overview

As an Excavator Operator at Layton Services, you will be responsible for maneuvering various heavy machinery to install water, sewer, and storm utilities. Your duties will include digging trenches to precise grades, including working in single and double-stacked trench boxes. This position demands close coordination with site supervisors and crew members to ensure that projects are executed safely, efficiently, and in full compliance with specifications. A strong focus on attention to detail and a thorough understanding of job site safety protocols are essential.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Operate excavators precisely to dig on grade near existing utilities and within trench boxes
  • Work collaboratively with pipe layers, foremen, and superintendents to safely complete projects according to plans
  • Manage loading and unloading of materials using excavators for on and off-road dump trucks
  • Demonstrate proficiency in operating various types of heavy machinery
  • Interpret site plans, specifications, and cut sheets accurately
  • Follow project directives and supervisor instructions diligently to ensure task completion
  • Adhere strictly to OSHA and Layton Services safety standards
  • Maintain a safety-first mindset across all duties
  • Perform any other duties relevant to the role as required

Qualifications and Skills

  • Minimum of three years of industry experience
  • At least two years of specialized experience excavating for utility mainline installation
  • Expertise in excavation, grading, trenching, and material handling methods
  • Ability to read and interpret project plans, site maps, and follow supervisor guidance
  • Strong knowledge of OSHA safety regulations and implementation
  • Possession of OSHA 10-Hour certification and OSHA Trenching and Excavating certification preferred, or willingness to complete upon hiring
