About the Role
We are currently seeking a skilled Estimator to join a dynamic and expanding construction team in the Midlands. This permanent, full-time position entails preparing precise and competitive cost estimates for various construction and maintenance projects. The role supports tender submissions, procurement tasks, and smooth project delivery. It is a vital commercial position that demands strong analytical capabilities, meticulous attention to detail, and effective collaboration with multiple teams including operational, design, commercial, and procurement.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop detailed cost estimates factoring in labor, materials, plant, subcontractors, overheads, and preliminaries.
- Thoroughly review and interpret tender documents such as drawings, specifications, schedules, and project scope.
- Identify potential project risks, opportunities, exclusions, and assumptions during the tendering process.
- Obtain and assess quotations from suppliers and subcontractors to secure competitive pricing.
- Work closely with design, commercial, and operational teams to ensure estimates comply with technical specifications and project schedules.
- Offer guidance on cost risks, contingencies, value engineering options, and alternative construction methods.
- Assist with post-tender negotiations and ensure effective transfer of estimating data to project delivery teams.
- Maintain and update estimating databases, cost libraries, and benchmarking information to enhance pricing accuracy and consistency.
- Engage in tender review meetings and articulate pricing strategies to senior management when required.
Requirements
- HNC/HND, degree, or equivalent background in Construction Management, Quantity Surveying, Civil Engineering, or related field.
- Demonstrated experience in a construction estimating role within the built environment sector.
- Strong numerical, analytical, and commercial insight.
- Competency in Microsoft Excel and construction estimating software.
- Sound knowledge of construction techniques, materials, and associated cost factors.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Full legal right to work in the UK.
Desirable qualifications and experience include membership or pursuit of membership in professional bodies such as RICS, CIOB, or ICES; experience in sectors like commercial, industrial, infrastructure, refurbishment, repairs, voids, asset management; familiarity with BIM, digital take-off, and data-driven estimating tools; experience preparing tenders for public sector or framework agreements; and a strong understanding of market trends and procurement strategies.
