Job description
Role overview
This opportunity is for an Estimator who will build precise cost models, quantity takeoffs, and competitive bid packages for excavation and sitework assignments, especially in heavy civil and infrastructure projects. The role is part of the preconstruction effort and involves reviewing drawings and technical documents, partnering with project staff, and helping make sure bids are practical, well-scoped, and aligned with budget goals.
Key responsibilities
- Develop detailed cost estimates, quantity takeoffs, and bid submissions for excavation, sitework, and other heavy civil work.
- Examine plans, specifications, and engineering documentation to determine scope, pricing approach, and possible project risks.
- Gather, compare, and assess pricing from subcontractors and vendors to produce complete and competitive bids.
- Look for savings opportunities and value-engineering alternatives while still protecting quality and safety standards.
- Work with project teams to verify constructability, resolve scope questions, and align estimates with budgets and schedules.
- Participate in pre-bid meetings and site walk-throughs to collect important project details and confirm site conditions.
- Maintain bid tracking, records, and supporting documentation so estimating files stay organized and accurate.
- Support project handoff by explaining estimate assumptions, scope inclusions, and pricing details to project management and field teams.
Required experience and capabilities
- At least 3 years of construction estimating experience, specifically within heavy civil and infrastructure work.
- Proven background in bid preparation, takeoffs, and preconstruction support.
- Working knowledge of estimating platforms such as HCSS, HeavyBid, and Bluebeam.
- Strong Excel skills for cost analysis, data organization, and reporting.
- Good understanding of construction techniques, excavation and sitework operations, and project paperwork such as drawings and specifications.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, plans, and technical documents accurately.
- Strong organization and project coordination skills to manage multiple bids and deadlines.
- Excellent analytical thinking, problem-solving ability, and attention to detail.
- Professional communication skills for working with internal teams, subcontractors, and vendors.
Preferred background
- A bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or a similar field is preferred.
- Experience with environmental and commercial excavation projects is an advantage.
- Knowledge of value engineering and cost-reduction methods in heavy civil construction is helpful.
- Ability to build productive relationships with subcontractors, vendors, and project stakeholders.
- Motivation to work in a team known for professionalism, responsiveness, and high-quality delivery under tight timelines.
Work environment
This is mainly an in-office role with occasional visits to active or prospective project sites. Daily work includes regular use of estimating tools such as HCSS, HeavyBid, Bluebeam, and Microsoft Excel in a professional office setting. Field visits may involve outdoor weather, active construction zones, and uneven ground, so proper field clothing and standard construction safety practices are expected. The environment is collaborative and fast-paced, with a strong focus on professionalism, responsiveness, and quality delivery across heavy civil, environmental, and commercial excavation work.
Employment details
This is a permanent, fully onsite position based in Carlisle, Pennsylvania.
Compensation and benefits
The expected salary range is $65,000 to $95,000 per year. Pay is competitive across positions. Healthcare benefits become available after a 90-day trial period, and the health plan includes options such as Capital BlueCross PPO.
