Job description

Overview

This is a strong career opportunity to join a highly regarded Resources and Energy equity research desk in Sydney. The team is part of a respected global institutional brokerage and investment platform, known for generating differentiated ideas for institutional investors. Its coverage spans ASX-listed businesses across the Resources, Materials and Energy sectors.

The role is suited to two Research Associates who will support senior analysts with research production, modelling, valuation work and client-facing materials. You will gain exposure to stock recommendations, commodity analysis, company and industry research, and engagement with a broad mix of market participants.

What you will do

You will help the research team produce daily publications and maintain the information used to support investment views. The position involves updating financial and commodity models, tracking company and market developments, managing industry databases, and assisting with the organisation of meetings across the sector.

You will also work directly with senior analysts on thematic research, company-specific projects and requests from institutional clients. In addition, you will contribute to presentations and marketing materials for fund managers, listed company management teams, and internal sales and trading colleagues.

The role includes ongoing support for the creation and maintenance of valuation models, sector datasets and coverage materials for stocks under research coverage. You may also take part in company meetings, industry conferences, site visits, and discussions with corporates, investors and other industry participants.

Candidate background

Applications are encouraged from people with experience or exposure in mining, energy, utilities, mining services, resources, engineering, equity research, corporate finance or funds management.

Suitable candidates will typically hold a bachelor’s degree or higher in business, commerce, finance, accounting, geology, mining engineering, petroleum engineering, chemical engineering, or a closely related field. Around 2 to 7 years of relevant experience is preferred, ideally across equity research, corporate finance, valuations, investment banking, transaction services, funds management, or a related resources-focused technical field.

CFA or MBA qualifications are considered an advantage, though they are not mandatory. Strong Excel ability, financial modelling skills and a solid analytical mindset are important, along with comfort working with quantitative data and commodity markets.

The team is also looking for someone with sharp attention to detail, strong communication and relationship-building ability, commercial awareness, intellectual curiosity, and the ability to manage deadlines in a fast-moving environment. Mandarin and/or Cantonese language ability, both written and spoken, would be beneficial but is not required.

Additional information

This role is based in Sydney and sits within one of the market’s leading institutional research platforms. It offers the chance to work closely with experienced analysts in a well-established resources and energy research team. Both candidates from financial markets backgrounds and those from industry or technical backgrounds are welcome to apply.

To express interest, candidates may send their resume to the named contact at the hiring firm.
