Job Summary

This position supports the cleanliness, sanitation, and overall upkeep of hospital spaces so that patients, employees, and visitors have a safe and pleasant environment. The role includes floor maintenance, waste disposal, linen processing, spill response, and routine cleaning work, all carried out in line with hospital procedures and infection prevention standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Carry out floor care duties such as sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, waxing, and shampooing to keep surfaces clean and safe.
  • Collect, transport, and dispose of waste correctly, including infectious, biohazard, and regular waste, while following facility rules and compliance requirements.
  • Manage soiled linen by handling it properly, replacing liners/bags as needed, and ensuring safe containment and storage.
  • Clean and disinfect patient rooms, washrooms, corridors, offices, and shared areas while meeting infection control expectations.
  • Attend to spills and contamination incidents with the correct cleaning and disinfection steps.
  • Shift furniture, mats, and equipment when required for cleaning, upkeep, or department moves.
  • Track use of cleaning supplies, apply cost-conscious practices, and store and use materials safely.
  • Report repair or maintenance issues to a supervisor or the facilities team so they can be addressed promptly.
  • Keep cleaning records accurate and complete, including task logs and service documentation.
  • Complete additional duties as assigned.
  • Maintain dependable, regular attendance.
  • Follow all hospital policies, procedures, and standards.

Experience and Qualifications

Applicants should have 1 to 3 years of experience in environmental services, housekeeping, custodial work, or hospital facility maintenance.

Knowledge and Skills

The role calls for familiarity with cleaning methods, floor care techniques, chemicals, safe waste handling practices, equipment use, and healthcare cleaning standards. Success in this job also depends on attention to detail, the ability to work to a schedule, and the capacity to function both independently and with a team in a busy hospital setting.

Certification Preference

A certification in Environmental Services or Healthcare Cleaning, such as CHEST or CHESP, is preferred.
