Role Summary
Reporting to the Manager of Environmental Services, this position is responsible for helping maintain a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for patients. The role also includes the secure and timely movement of patients, supplies, specimens, and equipment in line with established procedures.
Key Duties
- Deliver courteous, high-quality service to patients, visitors, and coworkers.
- Protect patient privacy and handle confidential information appropriately.
- Work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Follow PIDAC and infection prevention and control requirements.
- Take part in unit and department quality improvement work.
- Respond appropriately to emergency codes when required.
- Communicate clearly in both spoken and written form.
- Remain effective in a busy and fast-moving setting.
- Adapt to changing priorities, handle multiple tasks, and work efficiently.
- Stay organized and manage time and priorities well.
- Show consistency, reliability, and a strong work ethic.
- Meet the physical demands of the job, including lifting up to 50 lbs and performing work that is more than 80% physical, such as walking, standing, lifting, and pushing or pulling carts and equipment.
- Wear steel-toe footwear when working in Linen, Waste, or while operating the Ride-On Machine.
- Use ladders when needed.
Cleaning Responsibilities
- Carry out routine daily cleaning and discharge cleaning in patient rooms.
- Clean and maintain patient units, clinics, offices, corridors, the Labour and Delivery Operating Room, the Emergency Department, and the Mental Health Unit.
- Maintain flooring through scrubbing, waxing, and burnishing.
- Use and care for cleaning equipment such as floor scrubbers, speed scrubbers, ride-on machines, carpet cleaners, steamers, mops, and vacuums.
Patient and Equipment Transport
- Move patients safely using wheelchairs, stretchers, and beds.
- Deliver medical specimens promptly and securely to the correct location.
- Transport hospital equipment such as scopes and vital signs monitors.
- Handle deceased patient transfers to the morgue with respect and discretion.
Linen Duties
- Distribute clean linen and collect soiled linen from units and departments.
- Operate washers and dryers in the linen room.
- Process items such as privacy curtains, cubicle curtains, slings, restraints, mops, and patient-related materials.
Waste Handling
- Follow all relevant waste-handling regulations and procedures.
- Collect regular waste, recycling, biomedical waste, and sharps/pharmaceutical containers safely and efficiently.
Moves and Relocations
- Support office and department moves, including relocating furniture and equipment.
Qualifications
- Secondary school diploma or an equivalent credential is required.
- Completion of Environmental Services: A Course for Frontline Staff is preferred.

- Strong awareness of patient, worker, and workplace safety is expected.
- The successful candidate should help identify, report, and reduce unsafe acts or conditions.
