Role Summary

The Environmental, Health & Safety Coordinator supports the health and safety department administratively by managing communication of procedures, organizing ergonomic tools, and ensuring documentation accuracy and compliance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Maintain organized, current health and safety records including action trackers, return-to-work logs, and continuous improvement logs.
  • Collaborate with floor management to ensure timely resolution of safety-related action items and non-conformities.
  • Plan, schedule, and conduct trainings on health, safety, and environmental topics such as Lock Out Tag Out, Spill Response, Transportation of Dangerous Goods, and WHMIS.
  • Support emergency preparedness evaluations and assist with emergency response execution.
  • Coordinate with Human Resources on employee relations matters spanning departments.
  • Communicate safety information plant-wide and instruct supervisory staff on effective messaging.
  • Conduct safety audits at the facility to collect data, identify non-compliances, issue action items, and follow up appropriately.
  • Support identification and upkeep of environmental aspects and impacts.
  • Assist in risk assessments related to new products, processes, and services.
  • Inform senior management regarding formal safety non-conformities and needed interventions.
  • Monitor chemical inventory management.
  • Participate in JHSC meetings and ensure timely attention to open issues.
  • Help complete case management documentation including return-to-work logs, WSIB forms, and secure filing of sensitive employee records.
  • Track first aid incidents, injury investigations, required actions, and maintain logs via central systems.
  • Assist with preparation of annual environmental reports.
  • Support EHS Manager in document control for Environmental Management System compliance.
  • Perform ergonomic evaluations using tools such as Physical Demands Analysis, RULA, REBA, Video Analysis, NIOSH, and SNOOKE tables to ensure safe practices.
  • Lead initiatives to enhance health and safety programs and escalate significant concerns to the EHS Manager.
  • Help design programs to improve environmental, health, and safety standards.
  • Address employee safety and environmental concerns, reporting them as necessary.
  • Advise employees on the employee handbook and HR-related inquiries.
  • Ensure adherence, upkeep, and continual improvement of ISO14001 Environmental and ISO45001 Occupational Health & Safety Management Systems, and compliance with legal requirements.
  • Conduct internal audits of occupational health and safety management systems.
  • Perform hazard assessments at the workplace and provide feedback.
  • Follow all company policies related to health and safety, quality, environment, human resources, and employee conduct.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

  • The role involves working approximately 30% in an office setting and 70% on the plant floor where personal protective equipment (PPE) is mandatory.
  • The position entails regular verbal communication and listening.
  • The employee must be capable of lifting up to 35 pounds and exert push/pull forces up to 50 pounds.
  • Shift flexibility is required including potential rotation to midnight shifts.

Decision Making & Authority

  • Responsible for prioritizing workload and deciding communication methods with supervisors and managers.
  • Authorized to recommend changes to health and safety policies, processes, and systems.
  • Can escalate necessary actions for audit non-conformities.

Required Qualifications & Experience

  • Completion or progress towards post-secondary education in Health and Safety, Engineering, Kinesiology, Environmental Science, or Advanced Ergonomics.
  • Knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
  • At least 1 to 2 years of relevant professional experience.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite including Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
  • Strong oral and written English communication skills.
  • Understanding of health and safety best practices.
  • Excellent communication, presentation, analytical, and organizational capabilities.
