About the role

As an Environmental Health Officer, you will play an important role in safeguarding public health by making sure environmental health, food safety and public health laws are followed. The position is broad and hands-on, involving inspections, investigations, education and regulatory action, with collaboration across Council teams, government bodies and regional partners.

The vacancy is advertised as full-time, but part-time arrangements may be considered. Council is open to flexible options, including job share, where operational needs can still be met.

Key responsibilities

• Carry out inspections, investigations and compliance work relating to food premises, registered sites, onsite wastewater systems and wider environmental health matters.
• Respond to public health concerns such as infectious diseases, environmental nuisances, pest control matters, and issues connected to tobacco and vaping laws.
• Offer specialist guidance to residents, businesses and Council, and assist with health promotion activities and municipal public health planning.
• Prepare written reports, ensure legislative compliance, represent Council in legal matters when necessary, and contribute to regional environmental health services and emergency management responses.

About you

The ideal applicant is a motivated environmental health professional who can balance regulatory duties with community education and customer support. You should be organised, practical and comfortable working both independently and within a team environment.

• You hold a degree, or are close to completing one, in Environmental Health or a related field, and you have a current driver's licence.
• You have a solid understanding of public health and environmental health legislation, and either direct experience or the ability to quickly build capability in inspections, investigations, compliance work and environmental health equipment.
• You bring strong communication, customer service, planning, time management, report writing, problem-solving and computer skills, along with the ability to manage competing priorities.
• You are professional, approachable and resilient, with sound judgement, strong attention to detail, diplomacy and a collaborative, solutions-oriented mindset.
• You must be willing to travel regularly throughout the Shire to complete inspections and provide on-site services.
