Job description
Role overview
Triiodide Studios is looking for an Environment Artist to shape immersive 3D spaces and props for its co-op horror title, Backrooms: Escape Together. The role focuses on building believable environments through modeling, texturing, and lighting, with a strong emphasis on modular and procedural creation methods.
The ideal candidate combines a strong artistic eye with technical skill in real-time production pipelines. You should be comfortable turning real-world spaces into reusable modular art pieces, and you should understand how atmosphere, liminal design, and spatial composition affect player immersion.
You will partner closely with design and engineering teams to make sure every environment supports gameplay while still matching the game’s visual direction.
About the studio
Triiodide Studios is committed to creating memorable multiplayer experiences that players want to share. Its current game, Backrooms: Escape Together, is a continually updated co-op horror game built around the Backrooms concept and related online lore. The title has remained among Steam’s top-selling games, and the art team is expanding to support growing player demand.
This is an opportunity to join early and help shape the future direction of a fast-growing project.
Key responsibilities
- Create realistic environment assets optimized for real-time use in Unreal Engine 5, including support for Nanite, Lumen, Virtual Shadow Maps, and hardware ray tracing.
- Decompose real-world liminal locations into modular pieces that can be assembled into explorable game spaces.
- Develop modular kits, trim sheets, decals, and master materials that support procedural placement and efficient level construction.
- Set up lighting and material work that strengthens the mood and emotional tone of the game.
- Work with design and technical teams to ensure assets satisfy both gameplay needs and performance constraints.
- Take part in art reviews and offer useful feedback to help maintain visual consistency across the project.
- Keep all work aligned with the established artistic and technical standards for the game.
Requirements
- At least 3 years of professional experience working as an Environment Artist in game development.
- A strong portfolio showing realistic or atmospheric 3D environments, including work that demonstrates procedural generation or tool-supported world building.
- Practical knowledge of Unreal Engine 5, Substance 3D Painter, Substance 3D Designer, Maya or Blender, and Photoshop.
- Hands-on experience creating assets that make use of Nanite, Virtual Textures, and hardware ray tracing.
- Background in modular asset workflows and performance optimization for real-time rendering.
- Good understanding of composition, lighting, scale, and color theory.
- Strong communication abilities and a collaborative approach to teamwork.
- Interest in environmental storytelling and building atmospheric game worlds.
Preferred experience
- Experience working on horror titles or narrative-driven games.
- Familiarity with vertex painting, decals, and advanced material effects.
- Interest in liminal spaces or psychologically evocative visual design.
- Experience using Unreal Engine’s PCG system.
Compensation and benefits
- Pay is set at $50 to $75 USD per hour, depending on experience, skill set, and portfolio strength.
- Flexible remote or hybrid working arrangements are available.
Application details
Applicants should provide a resume, a portfolio or ArtStation link that highlights relevant 3D environment work, and optionally a short note about their interest in Backrooms: Escape Together or liminal-themed environments.
Applications without an environment art portfolio will not be considered. Materials are to be submitted through the employer’s hiring system, and applications are reviewed on a rolling basis.
