Role overview
GEMS American Academy in Qatar is seeking a dedicated and capable English Teacher to join its High School department. The appointment is scheduled to begin in August 2026.
Key responsibilities
- Champion the school’s culture of excellence and align daily work with the GEMS core values.
- Deliver the prescribed curriculum with strong, current subject and curriculum knowledge.
- Prepare and run engaging lessons, using varied resources and classroom setups to support different learning preferences.
- Keep written planning and preparation records available when asked, and maintain documentation such as scheme plans, attendance, teaching materials and assessment records.
- Follow all GEMS policies, procedures and conduct expectations consistently.
- Adapt instruction to suit diverse learner needs, including late joiners, ESL learners, lower-attaining students, and gifted and talented students.
- Assign, correct, assess and record student work, then use assessment evidence to track progress and respond to individual learning needs.
- Use media and classroom technology effectively to support teaching and learning.
- Support student development, well-being and academic guidance.
- Coordinate appropriately with external stakeholders such as Ministry of Education representatives when needed.
- Take part in appraisal, performance management and continuing professional development activities.
- Work collaboratively with colleagues on lesson resources, curriculum planning, pastoral support and related school initiatives.
- Contribute to co-curricular and extracurricular activities, and lead them where suitable.
- Encourage positive behaviour, self-discipline and safe conduct, including strategies for managing disruption.
- Model cultural understanding, nurture curiosity and help build a love of learning.
- Help plan and organise school events such as inter-house competitions, concerts, plays and prize days.
- Maintain regular communication with parents while upholding confidentiality and reinforcing the GEMS philosophy and values.
- Be willing to put in extra effort beyond standard hours when the work demands it.
- Attend staff meetings and serve on committees as required.
- Carry out additional tasks assigned by line managers or supervisors.
Requirements
- A B.Ed. or a bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline, along with PGCE, PGDE, or an equivalent Level 5 teaching qualification with an English specialism.
- Strong understanding of how ICT can be used in schools to improve teaching and learning.
- Proven teaching ability with firm subject knowledge and a clear commitment to student learning.
- Very good communication skills with the ability to build positive relationships with students, colleagues and the wider school community.
- At least 2 years of teaching experience in the relevant subject and age group.
- Ability to work collaboratively and contribute to the wider life of the school.
