New Zealand English Linguist - Remote Contract Role at $50/hr

Overview

This role requires an expert linguist familiar with New Zealand English to assess and transcribe audio/video content. It is a remote hourly contract position paying $50 per hour, demanding 10-20 hours weekly.

Primary Responsibilities

• Carefully listen to and transcribe English (New Zealand) audio and video, adhering to specific guidelines and constraints.
• Produce precise and high-quality written material reflecting supporting English content when necessary.
• Guarantee clarity, accuracy, strict conformance to formatting, and style standards.
• Identify and document nuances like tone, intent, formal/informal language, regional expressions, M0ori loanwords, and current New Zealand English usage.
• Set expectations for accurate and quality responses in general consumer audio scenarios.
• Create comprehensive evaluation rubrics and grading criteria in English.
• Establish documentation standards to maintain consistency among reviewers and evaluations.
• Recognize linguistic nuances, grammar structures, colloquialisms, cultural references, and specific edge cases tied to New Zealand English.
• Test prompts on language models and assess the outputs they generate.
• Judge responses based on accuracy, completeness, fluency, and clarity of instructions.
• Give structured feedback to enhance language model performance on New Zealand English audio-related projects.
• Engage in quality assurance and review cycles to ensure tasks meet established quality standards.
• Maintain consistency and dependability before datasets become part of official benchmarks.
• Work with project leads to clarify ambiguities and improve task designs.

Required Qualifications

• Excellent writing, editing, and critical thinking abilities.
• Capability to work independently, manage time effectively, and meet deadlines.
• Deep familiarity with New Zealand English vocabulary, accents, M0ori influences, and contemporary usage.
• Proven skill in accurately transcribing and analyzing English audio content across general consumer contexts.
• Educational background in linguistics, humanities, social sciences, journalism, translation/localization, or technical fields.
• Previous experience in transcription, annotation, localization, evaluation, or research workflows involving English language content.
• Awareness of distinctions between New Zealand English, Australian English, and other primary English variants.
• An interest in artificial intelligence, language models, or applied research settings.
