Job description
About the Organisation
This role sits within the Editing and Academic Publishing function of a major open-access publisher that manages a large portfolio of journals across many disciplines. The organisation’s purpose is to support open science and the global exchange of research by ensuring that peer-reviewed manuscripts are presented with clarity, consistency, and accurate English.
Role Overview
We are seeking a careful and committed English Editor with a strong command of English and a solid understanding of academic writing. In this position, you will help prepare scholarly manuscripts for publication by improving language quality while preserving the author’s intended meaning and tone. This is a full-time, office-based, entry-level opportunity in Singapore.
New hires will complete a probationary period that includes in-house training from an experienced editor. After this period, there are opportunities to broaden the scope of the role and build expertise in additional areas.
What You Will Do
- Refine scholarly manuscripts submitted to journals so they are ready for publication.
- Use your command of English and understanding of the manuscript’s subject context to improve clarity, consistency, and grammar without unnecessarily altering the author’s voice.
- Check that submissions follow the organisation’s house style and editorial rules.
- Work to demanding deadlines while maintaining a consistently high standard of output.
- Handle added duties when needed, including supporting the training of colleagues and editing corporate materials.
- Collaborate with editorial and production teams throughout the publishing workflow.
Requirements
- A bachelor’s degree in any discipline.
- Strong or expert-level command of the English language.
- Prior experience in editing, translation, or publishing.
- Good organisation and time-management ability.
- Excellent attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently as well as contribute effectively in an international team.
- Legal right to work in Singapore.
- Preferred: experience in academic research, editing, or publishing.
- Preferred: familiarity with LaTeX.
- Preferred: prior office-based work experience.
Benefits and Development
- Structured in-house training in editing scholarly content according to the organisation’s standards.
- Quarterly performance-based bonuses.
- Clear pathways for career progression.
- Competitive leave arrangements.
- Opportunities for professional and personal growth.
- An international workplace environment.
- Flexible working hours within the limits of a full-time role.
- Competitive compensation and benefits.
Application Process
Applicants must provide both a CV and a cover letter. Shortlisted candidates will be asked to complete two editing assessments and, if successful, will be invited to a final interview.
The cover letter should be attached with the application, and it should be checked carefully for errors before submission. If attachment issues arise, the cover letter may be sent by email to the address provided in the source listing.
Diversity, Equality, and Inclusion
The organisation describes its workplace as inclusive and values individual differences. It emphasises continuous learning, support, and feedback, and says it is actively developing initiatives to improve diversity and inclusion across its offices.
Sustainability and Organisational Context
The organisation also states that it supports sustainability initiatives through a dedicated foundation and that sustainability is a recurring theme across many of its journals. It operates multiple platforms serving the scientific community and has been supporting academic communities since 1996.
Headquartered in Switzerland, it has additional offices in Europe, Asia, and North America and publishes more than 400 peer-reviewed open-access journals supported by a large network of academic editors.
Additional Notes
This is an entry-level role with an emphasis on precision, editorial judgement, and the ability to work under pressure. Candidates should be comfortable operating in a fast-paced publishing environment.
