Engineer (m/f/d) in landscape architecture, landscape planning, or open-space planning for urban green and open-space concepts

About the role

The City of Nuremberg is seeking an engineer for the planning and development of urban green and open spaces within the public works service. The position sits in the planning and construction division, specifically in the green planning and development unit, and focuses on shaping citywide green infrastructure and resilient open-space strategies.

The role can be performed either full-time or part-time, with a minimum working time of 19.5 hours per week. It is a permanent position and should be filled as soon as possible.

Key responsibilities

• Update and strategically develop the master plan for open spaces, while contributing to interdisciplinary working groups at the citywide level.
• Create guiding principles and practical recommendations for green and open-space concepts as part of integrated district development.
• Plan, manage, and coordinate municipal projects linked to the “Compact Green Nuremberg” action plan, including ongoing financial control of the master plan for open spaces.
• Evaluate and interpret GIS-based data and record open spaces, their functions, and their development in GIS systems.
• Design, steer, and implement complex green and open-space concepts with attention to functionality, local needs, safeguarding development potential, and climate adaptation for resilient urban growth, using digital planning methods including GRÜN-GIS planning tools.
• Coordinate and carry out planning and construction projects, including tendering, procurement, project management, collaboration with external firms, and securing funding.
• Prepare and present technical reports and decision papers, and organize public participation activities as well as outreach and communications.

Profile and requirements

• You need a completed Bachelor’s degree or FH diploma in landscape architecture, open-space planning, landscape planning, or a closely related subject.
• Several years of relevant professional experience are required.
• You should bring strong technical expertise and the ability to work independently while thinking in connected and integrated ways.
• Initiative, organizational ability, and negotiating skills are important for success in this role.
• You must have very good digital skills, including GIS, CAD, and MS Office, plus solid knowledge of procurement and contracting rules such as UVgO, HOAI, and VOB.
• Strong teamwork skills and excellent spoken and written German are expected, with language ability comparable to C1 level.
• You must be fully medically fit for the duties of the position.
• A valid category B driving licence is required.
