Job description

Role Overview

PwC New Zealand is seeking a Manager-level Employment Tax specialist to join its Auckland team. This position sits within a growing practice focused on delivering high-quality advice and compliance support across employment tax matters, while helping further develop the local team.

You will work alongside experienced tax professionals on both advisory and compliance assignments, including PAYE and FBT reviews, employee share scheme reporting and advice, and ongoing employment tax compliance for clients. As an Inland Revenue accredited Participating Advisor, PwC also offers the chance to contribute to employment tax governance and risk review work.

The role involves collaboration across the national Tax & Legal Services network, bringing together specialists across corporate, private, legal, international, indirect, digital, and transactions tax. Comfort with AI and digital tools is important, as these are used to improve service quality and efficiency.

What You’ll Do

  • Handle or contribute to employment tax advisory and compliance projects of varying complexity, covering PAYE, FBT, and employee share scheme reporting, with guidance from senior tax advisers where needed.
  • Prepare practical, well-researched advice on PAYE, FBT, employee benefits, allowances, employee share schemes, pay arrangements, international workforce tax, and employer compliance obligations.
  • Support payroll and employment tax reviews, voluntary disclosures, Inland Revenue dealings, and related tax risk management assignments.
  • Assist with tax advice, structuring, and reporting for employee share schemes, including the treatment of equity-based reward plans.
  • Contribute employment tax and employee share scheme input to transactions, restructures, and wider business change projects.
  • Coach and delegate work to junior team members while supporting their development across advisory and compliance tasks.
  • Use GenAI, digital platforms, PwC methods, and quality controls to strengthen efficiency, consistency, and client outcomes.
  • Maintain and grow client relationships, act as a trusted adviser, and spot opportunities to support clients on employment tax, reward, and workforce tax issues.
  • Develop your capabilities while working across clients in multiple industries.

Experience and Skills

  • More than 4 years of demonstrated tax experience in a professional setting, including complex advisory work.
  • Strong exposure to PAYE, FBT, employee share schemes, remuneration, or similar workforce tax topics is preferred.
  • Solid understanding of tax law and revenue authority practices, gained in New Zealand or another jurisdiction with comparable tax rules.
  • Proven ability to lead teams or manage complex projects.
  • Experience in business development and client relationship management.
  • International experience combined with New Zealand tax experience would be an advantage.

What PwC Offers

  • Discretionary bonus potential, referral bonuses, and retail discounts and offers.
  • Access to a global network, leadership development, AI tools and training, and structured learning pathways.
  • Wellbeing support including a $250 annual wellbeing allowance, life and income protection, Sonder/EAP/Headspace access, 15 days of paid sick leave, and group-rate health insurance where eligible.
  • A strong brand reputation with the opportunity to grow your career while helping solve important client and community challenges.
  • Flexible working arrangements and a supportive coaching culture.
  • Two paid recognition days each year during the summer shutdown period, plus the option to buy up to two additional weeks of annual leave.
  • Paid parental leave for all parents with flexible options and financial planning support, inclusive networks, and paid volunteering leave.
