Employment Specialist / Job Coach

Role Overview

This position focuses on helping people with disabilities find, start, and keep employment in Buncombe County and nearby communities. The job combines hands-on coaching at work, individualized support, and practical guidance that aligns with each person’s abilities, interests, and long-term goals. The right candidate will be empathetic, well-organized, and comfortable communicating with participants, employers, families, and internal staff.

The organization is a CARF-accredited, statewide community human services provider serving individuals and families impacted by mental illness, developmental disabilities, and substance use challenges. Its mission is to help people reach their potential and live, work, and grow in the community.

Responsibilities

• Meet individually with participants to explore career interests, strengths, skills, and employment objectives.
• Support job seekers with resumes, applications, job searches, interview preparation, and placement activities.
• Deliver on-site coaching and training so individuals can learn tasks and perform successfully in the workplace.
• Connect employment opportunities with each person’s abilities, interests, and support needs.
• Create and carry out personalized employment and training plans.
• Help participants identify obstacles to employment and work through them.
• Develop working relationships with local employers and businesses to strengthen job development efforts.
• Advocate for reasonable accommodations in the workplace when appropriate.
• Keep records accurate and submit required reports on time.
• Coordinate with team members, family members, and employers to promote positive outcomes.

Requirements

• A degree in human services, business, or a related discipline is preferred.
• Prior experience in job coaching or supported employment is preferred.
• Background working with individuals with disabilities is preferred.
• Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills are needed.
• Good organization, problem-solving, and critical thinking abilities are important.
• Must be willing to work a flexible schedule, including some evenings, nights, and weekends during training periods.
• A valid driver’s license and dependable transportation are required.
